Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) in Silk Technology is a 4-year undergraduate engineering course which falls under the branch of textile engineering. It is defined as production of silk through various sources like silk worms and artificial sources including chemical treatments.

Course Description of B.Tech in Silk Technology

B.Tech in Silk Technology is a subject that falls under Textile Technology. In this course, students are trained on the production of silk which is a fabric material, not only from silk-worms but also through artificial processes. They are also taught about the properties of the fabric, its manufacturing process, dyeing and treating the material, and finally how to convert it into the finished product for selling purposes. The main points of importance are:

  • To focus on spinning, weaving, knitting, chemical processing, manmade fiber processing, textile testing, fabric manufacturing and quality control.
  • To provide a system approach in silk and textile technology to fulfill the need for high caliber technical manpower in the rapidly growing silk sector by increasing the overall efficiency in the industry and total output.

Duration

The B.Tech course is of 4 academic years divided into 8 semesters, each semester having duration of almost 16 weeks.

The program duration for Lateral Entry students is 3 years comprising of 6 semesters.

Eligibility Criteria for B.Tech in Silk Technology

Candidates are required to clear higher secondary (10+2) examination or its equivalent from any recognized Board or Council. They should have studied Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects and any of the following optional subjects: Chemistry, Biology, Biotechnology, Computer Science, Electronics or any other technical subject. Should have scored minimum of 45% marks in all the three subjects taken together. For some institutes, English is also one of the main subjects in the qualifying examination. A relaxation of 5% marks is applicable for those belonging to reserved categories (SC/ST/OBC).

Lateral entry admission to 2nd year of engineering course is possible and for that, eligible candidate must be a diploma holder from any of the recognized institute. Admission of suitable candidates is done on the basis of marks obtained in the IIT Mains or other entrance examinations.

Admission Process for B.Tech in Silk Technology

Eligible candidates have to clear the entrance examinations to pursue the course of Silk Technology. Entrance examination are national level based, namely IIT Mains and Advanced or state level examinations, such as Karnataka Common Entrance Test (KCET) or university level entrance exam. Some colleges also provide the option for direct admission via Board Merit list considering the marks obtained in Class XII.

Selected candidates from the entrance examination have to go through the counselling.

  • Karnataka Common Entrance Test (KCET) – Also known as Kar CET, it is a state level entrance examination conducted by the Karnataka Examination Authority (KEA). The exam is held in May every year for admission into various academic courses in the field of engineering, pharmacy, dental and other allied courses. Online applications are available on the KEA website from January. Exam is conducted in offline mode and the medium of KCET is English. Candidates are shortlisted and called for counselling based on KCET cutoff list for respective courses.
  • UPTU 2019 (AKTU or UPSEE) – UP State Entrance Examination (UPTU), also referred to as UPSEE or AKTU is a state level entrance examination conducted by the Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Technical University (AKTU). The exam is conducted in the month of April for admission into the undergraduate technical courses such as B.Tech, B.Arch, B.Pharm, MBA, MCA to name a few. Application forms are available in January and last date to submit the online forms including the payment is in March.
  • COMEDK UGET - COMEDK UGET is a state level entrance exam conducted by universities in Karnataka and managed by the Consortium of Medical, Engineering and Dental of Karnataka (COMEDK). COMEDK is for getting admission into UG courses in the field of medical, dental and engineering. Application forms are available in February and last date to apply is in April. Generally, COMEDK UGET 2019 Engineering Exam is conducted in the month of May.
  • Bihar Combined Entrance Competitive Examination (BCECE) – BCECE is the state level entrance examination conducted by the Bihar Combined Entrance Competitive Examination Board (BCECEB) for admission to the undergraduate courses in the field on engineering, pharmacy and others. The exam is conducted in 2 stages: Stage 1 and Stage 2. Candidates have to clear the Stage 1 exam to become eligible for Stage 2 exam.
