Three Myths Busted
- Myth: PGDM is only for BBA/BCom students. Graduates from any discipline can apply at many institutes.
- Myth: Every PGDM is automatically equivalent to an MBA. MBA equivalence for higher education is programme/institute-specific; AIU equivalence has defined approval and validity conditions.
- Myth: Private PGDM colleges always have direct or management-quota seats. This is not a universal route; some institutes explicitly prohibit direct or management-quota admission.
Ques. Can BA, BSc, BCom, BTech or other graduates pursue PGDM?
Ans. Yes. PGDM admission at many institutes is open to graduates from any recognised discipline, so a BBA or BCom background is not compulsory.
Ques. Is CAT compulsory for PGDM admission?
Ans. No. CAT is widely accepted, but depending on the institute, students may also use XAT, CMAT, MAT, ATMA or GMAT. MICA additionally conducts MICAT.
Ques. Which entrance exams should a student target for the next PGDM admission cycle?
Ans. CAT and XAT have broad acceptance among major PGDM institutes. As of August 18, 2026, CAT 2026 registration is ongoing, while XAT 2027 registration is open for the next admission cycle. CMAT, MAT and ATMA are useful depending on the chosen colleges.
Ques. What CAT percentile is required for PGDM?
Ans. There is no single PGDM cutoff. Every institute sets its own shortlisting standard and may combine the test score with academics, profile, work experience, diversity and interview performance. Students should use the latest institute-specific admission criteria instead of assuming one universal percentile.
Ques. Is PGDM the same as MBA?
Ans. Both are postgraduate management qualifications, but PGDM is a diploma awarded by eligible autonomous institutions, while an MBA is a degree. A PGDM should not automatically be treated as MBA-equivalent for every academic purpose; students planning higher studies should verify the current AIU equivalence of the exact institute and programme.
Ques. Which is better to choose: MBA or PGDM?
Ans. The choice should depend on curriculum, approval/accreditation, fees, placement record, faculty, location and career goals rather than only the MBA/PGDM title. For students planning a PhD or another degree later, checking the academic equivalence of the specific PGDM is especially important.
Types of Admission Routes in India
- National-Level Entrance Examination: CAT, XAT, CMAT, MAT and ATMA are widely used. Candidates generally take the exam and then submit separate applications to the PGDM institutes accepting that score.
- State-Level Entrance Examination: MAH MBA/MMS CET, KMAT, Karnataka PGCET or TANCET may be accepted by selected institutes/campuses. Acceptance is not uniform; for example, XIME specifies campus-wise acceptance for certain state tests.
- Institute-Level Entrance/Test: MICA uses MICAT together with CAT/XAT/GMAT for PGDM/PGDM-C admission.
- Profile/Merit-Based Shortlisting: Some institutes consider academic record, achievements, diversity and profile in addition to entrance scores. GIM's Achiever's Round can begin with profile-based shortlisting, although entrance-test performance is considered in the final process.
- Counselling-Based Admission: Relevant mainly where a participating institute admits seats through an applicable state entrance/counselling mechanism. Most major autonomous PGDM institutes instead run their own application and interview process.

| Final-Year Candidates | May apply at many institutes, subject to submitting proof of graduation within the prescribed deadline. |

Ques. What is a realistic starting salary after PGDM in India?
Ans. For the wider entry-level market, approximately INR 3 LPA–INR 8 LPA is a practical broad range for many analyst, trainee, finance, HR and operations roles. This should not be confused with campus-average CTC at highly selective institutes, where reported averages can be substantially higher.
Ques. Can PGDM students get foreign or international packages?
Ans. International roles can occur, particularly at institutes recruiting multinational employers, but they are not guaranteed and usually represent a small part of the batch. Students should compare job location, currency, taxes and cost of living rather than judging an offer only by converted INR CTC.
Ques. Which lower-fee options are available among the major colleges listed above?
Ans. Among the colleges in the table, BIMTECH at about INR 14 Lakh and WeSchool Mumbai at about INR 15.08 Lakh have lower listed total course fees than several other major private PGDM institutions shown above. Fees can be revised for a new batch.
Ques. Is work experience compulsory for a 2-year PGDM?
Ans. Usually not. SPJIMR states that work experience is not mandatory for its two-year PGDM, while Great Lakes' two-year PGDM accepts fresh graduates and candidates with limited work experience. Executive or one-year management programmes can have different requirements.
Ques. Can final-year graduation students apply for PGDM?
Ans. Yes, many institutes permit final-year students to apply provisionally. Admission remains subject to completing the bachelor's degree and submitting the required proof within the institute's prescribed deadline.
Ques. Is direct admission available in PGDM colleges without an entrance examination?
Ans. Students should not assume that it is. Major institutes commonly use entrance scores and selection rounds; BIMTECH explicitly states that it has no direct admissions, and Great Lakes states that it does not admit through management quotas.

FAQ’s
Ques. What is a PGDM, and what is its normal duration?
Ans. PGDM stands for Post Graduate Diploma in Management. A full-time PGDM is generally 2 years, although one-year variants also exist. The current PGDM General listings contain 270 two-year and 17 one-year options.
Ques. What percentage is required for PGDM admission?
Ans. A 50% aggregate in a bachelor's degree is a common requirement at many institutes. The exact minimum may differ by college and reservation category, so students should check the criteria of every institute they apply to.
Ques. Which PGDM specialisations are popular?
Ans. Common options include Marketing, Finance, Human Resource Management, Operations, Business Analytics, International Business, Supply Chain, IT/Information Management and BFSI/FinTech. The available combinations vary by institute.
Ques. Which PGDM specialisation has a higher salary?
Ans. There is no guaranteed highest-paying specialisation. Consulting, finance, analytics, technology/product and some sales/marketing roles can offer strong compensation, but salary depends heavily on college, role, employer, prior experience and individual performance. Placement reports from leading schools show large differences even within the same graduating batch.
Ques. Can I pursue a PhD or FPM after PGDM?
Ans. Yes, subject to the eligibility rules of the university/institute. Where an MBA-equivalent postgraduate qualification is required, students should verify that their exact two-year PGDM has the required current equivalence/recognition for higher education purposes.
Ques. Is a one-year PGDM equal to a two-year PGDM?
Ans. Not necessarily. Programme structure, target student profile, admission requirements and academic equivalence status can differ. Students intending to use the qualification for further academic study should verify recognition of the exact programme rather than relying only on the PGDM name.
Ques. Are scholarships available for PGDM students?
Ans. Yes, selected institutes offer merit-based or need-based assistance, while others may have entrance-score, corporate, alumni or tuition-waiver schemes. The scholarship amount or percentage is institute-specific and should not be assumed to apply across all PGDM colleges. MICA, for example, lists merit and need-based scholarship support.
Ques. What documents are generally required during PGDM admission?
Ans. Students commonly need Class 10 and 12 marksheets, graduation marksheets/degrees or provisional proof, an entrance-exam scorecard, identity proof and photographs. Category, disability and work-experience documents are required only where applicable or claimed in the application.
