Three Myths Busted

  • Myth: PGDM is only for BBA/BCom students. Graduates from any discipline can apply at many institutes.
  • Myth: Every PGDM is automatically equivalent to an MBA. MBA equivalence for higher education is programme/institute-specific; AIU equivalence has defined approval and validity conditions.
  • Myth: Private PGDM colleges always have direct or management-quota seats. This is not a universal route; some institutes explicitly prohibit direct or management-quota admission.

Ques. Can BA, BSc, BCom, BTech or other graduates pursue PGDM?

Ans. Yes. PGDM admission at many institutes is open to graduates from any recognised discipline, so a BBA or BCom background is not compulsory.

Ques. Is CAT compulsory for PGDM admission?

Ans. No. CAT is widely accepted, but depending on the institute, students may also use XAT, CMAT, MAT, ATMA or GMAT. MICA additionally conducts MICAT.

Ques. Which entrance exams should a student target for the next PGDM admission cycle?

Ans. CAT and XAT have broad acceptance among major PGDM institutes. As of August 18, 2026, CAT 2026 registration is ongoing, while XAT 2027 registration is open for the next admission cycle. CMAT, MAT and ATMA are useful depending on the chosen colleges.

Ques. What CAT percentile is required for PGDM?

Ans. There is no single PGDM cutoff. Every institute sets its own shortlisting standard and may combine the test score with academics, profile, work experience, diversity and interview performance. Students should use the latest institute-specific admission criteria instead of assuming one universal percentile.

Ques. Is PGDM the same as MBA?

Ans. Both are postgraduate management qualifications, but PGDM is a diploma awarded by eligible autonomous institutions, while an MBA is a degree. A PGDM should not automatically be treated as MBA-equivalent for every academic purpose; students planning higher studies should verify the current AIU equivalence of the exact institute and programme.

Ques. Which is better to choose: MBA or PGDM?

Ans. The choice should depend on curriculum, approval/accreditation, fees, placement record, faculty, location and career goals rather than only the MBA/PGDM title. For students planning a PhD or another degree later, checking the academic equivalence of the specific PGDM is especially important.

Types of Admission Routes in India

  • National-Level Entrance Examination: CAT, XAT, CMAT, MAT and ATMA are widely used. Candidates generally take the exam and then submit separate applications to the PGDM institutes accepting that score.
  • State-Level Entrance Examination: MAH MBA/MMS CET, KMAT, Karnataka PGCET or TANCET may be accepted by selected institutes/campuses. Acceptance is not uniform; for example, XIME specifies campus-wise acceptance for certain state tests.
  • Institute-Level Entrance/Test: MICA uses MICAT together with CAT/XAT/GMAT for PGDM/PGDM-C admission.
  • Profile/Merit-Based Shortlisting: Some institutes consider academic record, achievements, diversity and profile in addition to entrance scores. GIM's Achiever's Round can begin with profile-based shortlisting, although entrance-test performance is considered in the final process.
  • Counselling-Based Admission: Relevant mainly where a participating institute admits seats through an applicable state entrance/counselling mechanism. Most major autonomous PGDM institutes instead run their own application and interview process.

PGDM Admission Process

Step Admission Requirement
Qualifying Degree Complete a recognised bachelor's degree; 50% aggregate is a common requirement, but institute/category rules vary.
Eligible Background Arts, Commerce, Science, Engineering, Management and other recognised bachelor's disciplines are generally eligible.
Final-Year Candidates May apply at many institutes, subject to submitting proof of graduation within the prescribed deadline.
Entrance Exam Take an accepted test such as the CAT, XAT, CMAT, MAT, ATMA or GMAT; accepted exams differ by institute.
Institute Application Submit a separate application to the target institute with academic, entrance-score and profile details.
Shortlisting Shortlists may use entrance score, academics, work experience, profile and diversity factors.
Selection Round WAT, GD, group exercise and/or Personal Interview may be conducted depending on the institute.
Document Verification Degree/provisional certificate, marksheets, entrance scorecard, identity proof and category/work-experience personal interviews, where applicable.
Seat Confirmation Selected candidates accept the offer and pay the prescribed admission/confirmation fee within the deadline.
Direct/Merit Admission No universal direct-admission route exists. BIMTECH explicitly states that it does not offer direct admission, while Great Lakes states that it does not admit through management quota.

Top PGDM Colleges in India

Ques. What is a realistic starting salary after PGDM in India?

Ans. For the wider entry-level market, approximately INR 3 LPA–INR 8 LPA is a practical broad range for many analyst, trainee, finance, HR and operations roles. This should not be confused with campus-average CTC at highly selective institutes, where reported averages can be substantially higher.

Ques. Can PGDM students get foreign or international packages?

Ans. International roles can occur, particularly at institutes recruiting multinational employers, but they are not guaranteed and usually represent a small part of the batch. Students should compare job location, currency, taxes and cost of living rather than judging an offer only by converted INR CTC.

Ques. Which lower-fee options are available among the major colleges listed above?

Ans. Among the colleges in the table, BIMTECH at about INR 14 Lakh and WeSchool Mumbai at about INR 15.08 Lakh have lower listed total course fees than several other major private PGDM institutions shown above. Fees can be revised for a new batch.

Ques. Is work experience compulsory for a 2-year PGDM?

Ans. Usually not. SPJIMR states that work experience is not mandatory for its two-year PGDM, while Great Lakes' two-year PGDM accepts fresh graduates and candidates with limited work experience. Executive or one-year management programmes can have different requirements.

Ques. Can final-year graduation students apply for PGDM?

Ans. Yes, many institutes permit final-year students to apply provisionally. Admission remains subject to completing the bachelor's degree and submitting the required proof within the institute's prescribed deadline.

Ques. Is direct admission available in PGDM colleges without an entrance examination?

Ans. Students should not assume that it is. Major institutes commonly use entrance scores and selection rounds; BIMTECH explicitly states that it has no direct admissions, and Great Lakes states that it does not admit through management quotas.

FAQ’s

Ques. What is a PGDM, and what is its normal duration?

Ans. PGDM stands for Post Graduate Diploma in Management. A full-time PGDM is generally 2 years, although one-year variants also exist. The current PGDM General listings contain 270 two-year and 17 one-year options.

Ques. What percentage is required for PGDM admission?

Ans. A 50% aggregate in a bachelor's degree is a common requirement at many institutes. The exact minimum may differ by college and reservation category, so students should check the criteria of every institute they apply to.

Ques. Which PGDM specialisations are popular?

Ans. Common options include Marketing, Finance, Human Resource Management, Operations, Business Analytics, International Business, Supply Chain, IT/Information Management and BFSI/FinTech. The available combinations vary by institute.

Ques. Which PGDM specialisation has a higher salary?

Ans. There is no guaranteed highest-paying specialisation. Consulting, finance, analytics, technology/product and some sales/marketing roles can offer strong compensation, but salary depends heavily on college, role, employer, prior experience and individual performance. Placement reports from leading schools show large differences even within the same graduating batch.

Ques. Can I pursue a PhD or FPM after PGDM?

Ans. Yes, subject to the eligibility rules of the university/institute. Where an MBA-equivalent postgraduate qualification is required, students should verify that their exact two-year PGDM has the required current equivalence/recognition for higher education purposes.

Ques. Is a one-year PGDM equal to a two-year PGDM?

Ans. Not necessarily. Programme structure, target student profile, admission requirements and academic equivalence status can differ. Students intending to use the qualification for further academic study should verify recognition of the exact programme rather than relying only on the PGDM name.

Ques. Are scholarships available for PGDM students?

Ans. Yes, selected institutes offer merit-based or need-based assistance, while others may have entrance-score, corporate, alumni or tuition-waiver schemes. The scholarship amount or percentage is institute-specific and should not be assumed to apply across all PGDM colleges. MICA, for example, lists merit and need-based scholarship support.

Ques. What documents are generally required during PGDM admission?

Ans. Students commonly need Class 10 and 12 marksheets, graduation marksheets/degrees or provisional proof, an entrance-exam scorecard, identity proof and photographs. Category, disability and work-experience documents are required only where applicable or claimed in the application.

Fees and Financial Aid

The total fee for my PGDM course is 9.5 Lakhs. This includes tuition fees and other academic charges such as registration, library, and development fees. The college also offers merit-based scholarships and financial assistance for eligible students based on academic performance and other criteria. Overall, the fee is justified considering the quality of education, practical learning opportunities, infrastructure, and placement support.

Faculty

The faculty members at GIBS Business School are experienced, knowledgable, and very approachable, maintaining a good faculty to student ratio that allows for individual attetion and mentoring. I particularly liked Hari Prakash sir, Parameshwar sir and Dilipan sir for their practical teaching approach and guidance throughout the course.

The overall PGDM course is significantly well-structured and includes a good balance of theortical concepts and practical learning. One of the several reasons I chose GIBS Business School was its industry-oriented curriculum, which emphazies case studies, live projects, internships and skills development alongside core management subjects.

Faculty

Theie is atleast 2 faculty for 1 student, the faculty are well updated, professional and highly knowldegeable in their departments and have their own expertise. There are external exams at the end every trimester and they also take mid-term exams along with assignments between the trimesters.

Placement Experience

Since we are going into our 2nd year, our batch hasn't been through campus placement yet. Based on previous batch records, though, students are typically eligible for placements from the 4th trimester onwards, once internships are completed. GIBS had a strong track record, with over 200+ companies visiting campus, including names like Amazon, Accenture, Wipro, Mahindra Finance, etc. The highest package offered was around 20 LPA, and average package was around 8.3 LPA

Fees and Financial Aid

The total course fee for my PGDM program at GIBS is around 9.5 lakhs for the full 2-year course, which includes tuition fees, study material, and other academic charges. This is usually paid in yearly or semester-wise instalments rather than one lump sum, so it's manageable. As for scholarships for students who score well in entrance exams like CAT,XAT, MAT,CMAT, along with other scholarships such as academic achievements and excellence awards.

Course Curriculum Overview

Even though it is not fully practical but it teaches real life cases upto a certain level. Practical exposure to work is a reason for my influence into this college. The Curriculum is preparing to understand the real world cases upto moderate level we should work more to make it to difficult level. Interactions with industry experts directly rather than with lectures to understand their work. Course curriculum is up to the date but teaching methods should be changed. Rather than showing ppts it should involve students to give a explanation so that they understand it well and explain it to their friends to understand it deeply. The frequency and timing of exams along with perspective is too difficult as exams are too close not enough time to relieve of stress.

Faculty

the faculty to student ratio is 1: 20 where students can get guidance from other faculties as well. Faculty usually welcome every student to express their doubts and ideas. NSR Murthy sir, Kethan sir, Balaji naik Sir, Hari Prasad sir and Sri Nidhi sir as i like these faculties because they always stand by the student side to support us. Best Faculties are NSR Murthy sir and Kethan sir. I can name one of the faculty not because of any personal hatred but due to behaviour as she has always carry a serious look unlike the other faculty Trupthi mam. She always carries a serious look while other faculty handles the situation with a smile. there are 3 exams mainly 2 sets are for internals and one set for external.

Course Curriculum Overview

The curriculum is fairly well structured and balanced covering both theoretical foundations and some level of practical exposure one of the aspects that influence my decision to choose this course was a inclusion of course subjects like finance marketing economics and basic data science or analytics which are highly relevant for careers in business and management in terms of fuel preparedness the curriculum is a decent job but has scope for improvement while concepts are clearly explained the practical application is limited the teaching methods across faculty some professors use interactive methods such as discussions and case based learning

Placement Experience

Placement op in the college are decent but not exceptional and students need to be proactive to secure good offers generally students become eligible for campus placements from the final year a number of companies and start-ups visit the campus for recruitment mainly offering rules and sales marketing finance operations and business analytics the average package offer ranges between 3 to 5 LPA while the highest package can go up to around 6 to 8 LPA depending on the student skills and company

Course Curriculum Overview

The course circular at International Institute of Business Studies Bengaluru is fairly relevant and designed to provide a balance between theoretical knowledge and practical exposure. One of the key aspects that influenced my decision to choose. This course was the inclusion of case studies, presentations, and industry oriented subjects which help in understanding real-world business scenarios. The circular does a decent job in preparing students for practical applications through activities like group discussions, assignments and projects. It also supports skill development in areas such as communication, problem-solving, and analytical thinking which are essential for corporate roles and further academic pursuits.

Placement Experience

Placement in my college is decent, wiyh around 90% of students are getting placed. Students usually become eligible for placement in their final year and the college provides internships opportunities before that, which helps in gaining experience. Many companies visit to campus mainly from marketing and sales, along with some roles in HR and operations. The number of offer is good but option for finance and analytic are comparatively limited.

Course Curriculum Overview

The PGDM course curriculum is quite relevant and practical compared to traditional MBA. One of the main reasons I choose this course was its focus on real world learning through case studies, presentations, and guest lectures from industry experts. These activities helps in understanding how concepts are applied in actual business situations.

Internships Opportunities

Moglix and Collegeduniya came for hiring interns for HR department with ppo of around 6 lpa and offering stipend of 10 k - 15k. before internship process college offered 15 days live project in which students willing to take operations, sales, marketing as a specialization went to Reliance Mart at various locations, students willing to take finance as a specialization went to cura capital and students willing to take Business Analytics went to IMRB Kantar. This helped alot in knowing whether the we are a good fit for the specialization we are chosing or not. Apart from this our internship will start from the month of May but few students got internship in the month of Fbruary only and they received the ppo as well.

Course Curriculum Overview

Qualification and experience of professors attracted me. And in Elite batch they are assuring minimum 12lpa package for placement and they give us opportunity to sit in 25 opportunities with minimum package of 12 lpa. Curriculum is entirely case study based and apart from this they organise various club activities as well. They should increase industrial visits for better learning. Difficulty level of exams are moderate to difficult. And here they take exams on laptop, no pen and paper exams which will help us in increasing our typing speed.

Faculty

The Faculty of the college is very supportive, knowlegable with years of corporate and teaching experience. For every 20 students there is one faculty in a batch of 240 students.
