Emphysema is a lung disease that results in shortness of breath. Emphysema causes damage to the air sacs in the lungs known as alveoli.

  • Over time, the inner walls of the air sacs weaken and rupture, resulting in larger air spaces instead of many small ones.
  • This lowers the surface area of the lungs, and hence the amount of oxygen that enters into the bloodstream.
