In simple terms, the environment is our immediate surroundings, which includes both biotic and abiotic influences. We live in a setting, which could be natural, social, or constructed. These are the environments in which humans, plants, and animals exist. Given the diversity of the world in which we live, it is difficult to classify the environment properly. However, there are two sorts of environments that are widely recognized and accepted: natural or geographical environments and man-made environments. Geographical and manmade environments are the two basic categories in which the environment is classified.

  • Geographical Environment - The sciences of climatology, geology, and biogeography are all part of the geographical environment. They are direct manifestations of how human society views the Earth's landscape. Because it interacts with nature, the geographical environment is sometimes known as a natural environment. Natural environment examples include the earth's surface, rivers, mountains, deserts, land, water, oceans, volcanoes, and so on. Geographical environment refers to the terrestrial environment, which is made up of a variety of natural and environmental factors. 
  • Man-made Environment - A social environment is also referred to as a man-made environment. Man cannot live in his geographical environment directly, so he constructs some of his own environmental conditions to compensate. This is a man-made or human-made environment that was created by humans. The social environment that lasts as long as society values it is known as the inner environment. The inner environment has a huge influence on people's life. The outside environment is the physical world that man has constructed on his own via the advancement of science and technology. The alteration of the physical environment has aided in the advancement of people and the development of the environment.

The introduction of harmful or hazardous items into the natural environment is known as pollution. Pollution also refers to the presence of undesired elements in the natural environment, as well as the contamination of the natural environment with potentially harmful compounds as a result of human activity. Because they contaminate and modify natural habitats, pollutants are collectively referred to as contaminants. The numerous types of pollution are listed below.

2. Water pollution - The act of contaminating water bodies such as rivers, oceans, lakes, streams, aquifers, and groundwater is known as water pollution. It occurs when foreign dangerous items such as chemicals, garbage, or polluted substances are dumped into water bodies, either directly or indirectly.

3. Land Pollution - The degradation or reduction in the quality of the earth's land surfaces in terms of use, landscape, and ability to support living forms is referred to as land pollution. Human activities and overuse of land resources are frequently the cause, both directly and indirectly.

4. Soil Pollution - Soil contamination occurs when chemical pollutants pollute the soil or when the soil is deteriorated by activities such as mining, vegetation clearance, or topsoil erosion.

5. Noise Pollution - Noise pollution is often defined as an unwelcome sound or sound that causes excruciating pain in the ears. Noise pollution is defined as unfavorable sound levels that cause significant discomfort to all living beings. It's expressed in decibels (dB).

6. Thermal Pollution - When water bodies are damaged in terms of temperature, this is known as thermal pollution. It usually occurs when people or companies engage in activities that cause a natural water body's temperature to drop or rise quickly, such as lakes, rivers, oceans, or ponds.

7. Industrial Pollution - The release of wastes and pollutants generated by industrial activity into the natural environment, including air, water, and land, is known as industrial pollution. Air emissions, discharge of spent water into water resources, landfill disposal, and injection of harmful compounds underground are all examples of pollutants and wastes produced by companies.

8. Light Pollution - Light pollution occurs when artificial lights are used for longer periods of time and in excess, resulting in the brightening of the night sky. As a result, it disrupts the activities and normal cycles of wildlife, as well as human welfare. It is inconvenient whenever artificial lights are utilized in places where they are not intended.

Tropospheric pollution is caused by both gaseous and particulate air contaminants. Sulfur oxides, nitrogen oxides, and carbon monoxide are among the gaseous air pollutants that contribute to pollution. Acid rain and photochemical smog, as well as the greenhouse effect and global warming, are all caused by chemical and photochemical reactions in the environment. The greenhouse effect describes how "greenhouse gases" trap heat at the Earth's surface. These heat-trapping gases are like a blanket wrapped over the earth, keeping it warmer than it would be otherwise. Greenhouse gases are produced naturally and are part of the composition of our atmosphere. As a result, Earth is sometimes referred to as the "Goldilocks" planet because its temperatures are just suitable for life (including humans) to thrive.

However, people have been meddling with the planet's energy balance for the past century or two, primarily through the burning of fossil fuels, which release carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere have been steadily growing for decades, trapping more heat at the Earth's surface and rising temperatures.
