Any sample of solid, liquid, or gas that comprises chemically different components is known as a mixture. On the basis of the proportion of the different components of the mixture and the degree to which the components blend with each other mixtures are classified as homogeneous and heterogeneous mixtures. In a Homogeneous mixture, the components are in uniform proportion and have a definite composition and the components blend with each other evenly. While in a heterogeneous mixture the components are not in the consistent proportion that is they do not have a definite composition and do not mix uniformly. Nature of Heterogeneous Mixtures

A phase is any part of a sample that has a definite composition. In this sense, a heterogeneous mixture, without a definite composition is said to exhibit more than one phases, in which every constituent has its own phase. The particles of the mixture can be of different sizes and are from different sources. For example, soil is a heterogeneous mixture that has particles of mud, clay, sand, organic matter water droplets, and mineral elements in the form of compounds. Thus, in soil, its constituting particles are of different shapes and sizes and come from totally different sources. Another most striking aspect of a heterogeneous mixture is that it can be found everywhere on the earth even in space meteors, meteorites, the planets, the moon, and literally everywhere!

Some of the most important properties of heterogeneous mixtures are listed below:-
- Have indefinite composition and do not mix evenly. The composition of a heterogeneous mixture varies from one region to another throughout the mixture.
- The different components are easily detectable and hence can be separated easily by using physical methods of separation.
- The constituents of a heterogeneous mixture do not share any chemical bonding while present in the mixture.
- They exhibit the Tyndall effect and Brownian movement, especially Colloidal Solutions.

On the basis of the size of particles of the dispersed phase
Heterogeneous mixture is a broad term classification to describe mixtures. But things get more interesting as they get more specific. So, to better understand what a heterogeneous mixture is, we classify it further into two categories: Suspension and Colloidal Solutions. To Understand what a Suspension and a colloidal solution is one must be well acquainted with the terms- dispersed phase and dispersion medium.
- Dispersed phase: The Phase that is scattered or dispersed as colloidal particles in a particular solvent is known as the dispersed phase.
- Dispersion medium: The medium in which the components of a solution are scattered is known as the dispersion medium.
Let's take the example of mud water which is a heterogeneous mixture of sand, clay, dust particles, Rock particles, etc. all mixed in water. Here the water act as the dispersion medium in which the other components are present while the rest of the constituents of this mixture is considered to be the dispersed phase.
- Suspension- A suspension is a solution that has the size of dispersed particles greater than 1000 nm. In a suspension, the particles can be seen with naked eyes and settle down at the bottom of the container when kept standing. For example mud water.
- Colloids- Colloids are particles that have a size ranging between 1 nm to 1000 nm. The colloidal particles have some degree of charge on their surface which helps them to keep afloat in the liquid and prevent their settling down due to the force of gravity. Colloidal Solutions exhibit the Tyndall effect and Brownian effects. A wide variety of products that we use in our daily life are colloidal in nature. Not only that, most of the heterogeneous mixtures in nature are present in the colloidal state.
On the basis of the physical state of the dispersion medium, heterogeneous mixtures are classified into the following categories:-
- Heterogeneous solid mixture
A solid heterogeneous mixture is one that has the bulk components in the solid state. ThoughSuch mixtures can have gaseous or liquid components as well but the proportion of the solid component is Greater and the mixture as a whole act like a solid.
- Chanachur the common Indian snack is nothing but a heterogeneous mixture of different snacking food items mixed together.
- Rocks and sand. The sand at the beach is an example of a heterogeneous solid mixture having varying quantities of different substances such as rock particles, clay, shells, and some organic matter.
- Soil is another example of a solid heterogeneous mixture containing solid components (mineral salts, organic matter) liquid components (some liquid mineral compounds such as water), and gaseous components oxygen and air.
- Heterogeneous liquid mixture
When the dispersion medium is in a liquid state with all its solid and gaseous components such a mixture is known as heterogeneous liquid mixtures. In other words, in a heterogeneous liquid mixture, a mixture appears to be in the liquid state. Some examples of heterogeneous liquid mixtures are-
- Oil and water- When one adds about a few drops of oil to a small sample of water and stirs it, it is observed that the oil and water do not mix properly and are present in different phases in the mixture.The layer of oil appears to float on the surface of the water.
- Mud puddle- A roadside puddle formed just after rain is also a heterogeneous liquid mixed with water as a bulk component or the dispersion medium and the dust particles, mud, and clay particles as the dispersed phase mixed unevenly in water.
- Heterogeneous gaseous mixture
Nature has its own way of surprising us with the fact that solids and liquids can also be mixed in gases and can remain suspended in between the gas molecules. Such mixtures are called heterogeneous gaseous mixtures. Some examples of the heterogeneous gaseous mixture are as follows:-
- Smog and mist- Smog is a colloidal solution of dust and smoke particles dispersed in the dispersion medium, which is air.Mist is a heterogeneous gaseous mixture as it contains tiny water droplets dispersed in the air. Both smog and Mist reduce the visibility in an area because the suspended particles do not allow light to pass through them easily.
- Clouds. The water vapor that gets collected in the upper layers of the atmosphere and remains suspended in the air is known as clouds. In a cloud the water droplets form a colloidal solution with the dispersion medium, that is, the atmosphere.
Techniques for Separation of Heterogeneous Mixtures

Some of the techniques used for the separation of heterogeneous mixtures are:
- Sedimentation and Decantation - Sedimentation involves settling down the solid particles in a solid-liquid mixture. Decantation involves pouring out of the upper layer of liquid. E.g. sedimentation of suspended impurities in muddy water.
- Filtration - Filtration involves the separation of a mixture of the insoluble solid component from its liquid component in a solid-liquid mixture by filtering out the solid component using filter paper. E.g. filtration of chalk from a mixture of chalk and water.
- Evaporation- Evaporation involves the separation of a mixture of a soluble solid component from its liquid component by heating the mixture which results in evaporation of the liquid component into the atmosphere leaving behind the solid component. E.g. common salt solution on evaporation leaves behind the salt only.
- Distillation -Distillation involves the separation of a soluble solid component from its liquid component by use of a distillation apparatus which results in recovery of the liquid component after evaporation followed by condensation. E.g. common salt solution on distillation leaves behind the salt and the condensed liquid water.

For example, in mud water, water serves as a dispersion medium in which mud, clay, sand, and dust particles, are dispersed.

Ans. As chalk and water form a suspension, it can be separated from each other by using the technique of filtration. By bypassing the suspension through a filter paper one can easily separate water and chalk.

b) Distillation is preferred to evaporation for obtaining both the constituents in a saltwater solution because in the process of distillation both the components of the solution- the solvent and the solute can be obtained separately. But while using the process of evaporation only one component that is the solute can be obtained while the solvent cannot be collected.

Ans. Alum is added to a mixture of suspended impurities in water during the process of sedimentation because the addition of alum increases the rate of sedimentation and hence clean water can be obtained in a short time.

Ans. The different everyday applications of the process of filtration are as follows:-
- In the kitchen filtration separates the unwanted substance by use of a sea trainer. For example, while boring tea that he leaves is separated by using a strainer.

- BY CHEMISTS- Separation of salts - from a salt solution is carried out by distillation.
