NCERT Solutions for Class 10 English First Flight Poem 6 Amanda Summary
- This poem, by Robin Klein, depicts a young girl, Amanda, whose mother is known to continuously point out her mistakes. She is always instructed by her mother about the things she must do, and things she should avoid.
- Her mother instructs her against biting nails and bending her back. Amanda’s mother asks her, now and then, to sit upright and not walk lazily.
- Being scolded almost all the time, Amanda begins getting deep in sorrow, imagining her life in a deep green sea.
- Her mother asks her questions about whether she has cleaned her room and her shoes.
- By this point, Amanda starts imagining her life as an orphan. She believes that an orphan has more freedom than her. Had she been an orphan, she imagines, then it would be easy to roam the street bare feet.
- Amanda’s mother instructs her to keep her shoes clean and do her homework for her to make life simpler. However, Amanda believes otherwise.
- She feels that her mother is snatching her freedom away. She often feels that her life resembles the one of Rapunzel, whose life, too, was inside a tower.
- The poem conveys an important message and advises us to not deprive children of their liberty.
- It is the responsibility of parents to understand their children’s viewpoints and know why they’re becoming frustrated as human beings.
- Children, in the words of the poet, shouldn’t feel that an orphan has more liberty than them.
