NCERT Solutions for Class 10 English Footprints Without Feet Chapter 3 The Midnight Visitor Summary
- The Midnight Visitor, a story by Robert Arthur, is about a witty secret agent, Ausable. The story starts by showing Ausable and his friend, Fowler going out to spend the evening together.
- Fowler gradually realised that Ausable was the opposite of what he considered him to be. Ausable told him that he had been assuming the situation otherwise.
- He also mentioned that he was about to look at some very significant reports that could change the country’s future. Claiming so, they entered the room.
- As soon as they enter their room, they find a man standing with his gun. His name was Max.
- Max asked them to stay in comfort until the reports of missiles arrived. Fowler was immediately in shock as he encountered this event.
- Meanwhile, Ausable tried diverting Max’s attention by telling a hypothetical story about the balcony below the window in his room.
- Right after, there was a knock on the door and it became louder with time. Ausable hinted to Max that it might be the police since they often drove and were greeted by him regularly.
- Confused, Max pointed his gun toward the other two men and responded that he’d wait on the balcony until the police left the room.
- In no time, Max jumped out the window and there was a loud scream. In the meantime, Ausable opened the door and greeted the waiter who brought wine on his way. In utter disbelief, Fowler asked Ausable about the police.
- Ausable mentioned that he lied about the police since his motive was to frighten Max. Fowler, perplexed, responded that Max might still wait on the balcony.
- Ausable replied that there was no balcony attached to the window in his room. He rather lied about the whole story.
- Max, who was confused and intimidated, jumped out of the window and lost his life to death because he wasn’t aware that there was no window. This proves how witted Ausable was.
