- Bholi, by Khwaja Ahmad Abbas (K.A. Abbas), is about a girl, Sulekha, who was called 'Bholi' for her simple nature she had.
- At only ten months, Bholi survived a fall from her cot and since then, she stammered while learning to talk as it damaged some parts of her brain.
- She was often mocked for the marks she had since early childhood. Most people assumed her retarded when she stammered.
- Bholi was the youngest of all daughters her father, Ramlal had. Her father had three sons too.
- Her parents were worried about Bholi's marriage. One day, Tehsildar Sahib arrived to perform an inaugural ceremony of a primary school for girls, Ramala decided against sending his daughters
- Ramlal and his wife believed that nobody would want to marry their daughters if they go to school.
- However, they sent Bholi as they weren't sure whether she would get married or not.
- She assumed that the school was a better place than her own house and started being a regular student.
- On her first day, she was glad to see girls her age but was scared to talk as she stammered.
- While in class, the teacher asked her name and she shuttered while saying it. The class laughed and she felt demotivated.
- However, the kind-hearted teacher offered her books and asked her to read them as she believed that it would reduce the habit of stammering. She finally had hope again.
- After years, Bholi received a marriage proposal from Bishamber Nath. He was an old, limping man with grown children of his own. But Bholi's father still accepted the proposal seeing he is a settled man.
- On their marriage day, as the groom was about to put the garland around Bholi's neck, a woman somehow slipped her veil.
- Shocked seeing the pockmarks, Bishamber refused to marry unless paid an amount of five thousand rupees as dowry. After her father managed to give the dowry, Bholi denied marriage midway. Everyone was shocked listening to her speak without stuttering.
- Bholi further promised her parents to take care of them during their old age.
