• The Making of a Scientist, a story by Robert W. Peterson, talks about a famous scientist, Richard Ebright who was known for his curiosity.
• He was fond of collecting butterflies, and by the time he was in second grade, he already collected 25 species of butterflies. After seeing this, his mother gifted him a book, ‘The Travels of Monarch X’.
• The book made him want to explore more. It taught him that Monarch butterflies usually migrated to Central America. He further wanted to do something out of the box and continued experimenting.
• During his eighth grade project, he attempted at discovering the disease a virus caused that kills almost all Monarch caterpillars each year. Exhibiting the project, he won the contest at the county science fair.
• Ebright, during his second year in high school, started researching a mysterious insect hormone, leading to his theory on the life of cells. The motive of his theory was to discover the purpose of the twelve golden spots found on a monarch pupa.
• Researching his theory, he won a chance to work in the entomology lab at Walter Reed Army Institute of Research.
• He finally understood the blueprint of its DNA and along with his roommate, James R. Wong, he constructed plastic molecules to depict how it works.
• Soon, he came second in class and his work was published in a Science magazine.
• He was a bright student who secured the position at Harvard Medical School to work as a researcher. His willpower and constant curiosity toom him higher.
