Class 11 Biology Chapter 15 Plant Growth and Development: Important Topics

Plant growth is accomplished by cell division, increase in cell number, and cell enlargement. So, growth is a quantitative phenomenon that can be measured in relation to time. Plant growth is generally indeterminate due to the capacity for unlimited growth throughout life.

  • Seed Germination

Seed germination is referred to as the fundamental process with the help of which different plant species grow from a single seed into a plant. This process affects both crop yield and quality. A common example of seed germination is the sprouting of a seedling from a seed of an angiosperm or gymnosperm.

  • Growth Regulators

There are, generally, five types of plant hormones, namely, auxin, gibberellins (GAs), cytokinins, abscisic acid (ABA), and ethylene. Apart from these, there are more derivative compounds, both natural and synthetic, which also act as plant growth regulators.
