Class 11 Biology Chapter 21 Neural Control and Coordination: Important Topics

The neural system provides an organized network of point-to-point connections for quick coordination. Control and coordination are required for the survival of any organism. It is necessary for each biotic organism to obtain its nutrients and conditions to survive which could be made possible with the presence of the control and coordination systems. The harmonious functioning of interrelated organs and parts is applied especially to the process of the motor apparatus of the brain which provides for the co-working of particular groups of muscles for the performance of definite adaptive useful responses.

  • Neuron and Nerves

Nerves are found in the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves. The neuron, also known as the nerve cell, is the structural and functional unit of the nervous system. The cell body, dendrites, and axon are the components of the neuron.

  • Nervous System in Humans – Central Nervous System

The neural system, in the human body, integrates the activities of organs based on the stimuli, which the neurons detect and transmit. One of the most complex organ systems to ever evolve, the human nervous system consists of two parts, namely:

  1. Central Nervous System (consists of the brain and spinal cord)
  2. Peripheral Nervous System (includes all the nerves of the body)
