Class 11 Chemistry Chapter 11 p Block Elements – Important Topics

p Block elements are those where the valence electrons fill any of the three p orbitals. In the periodic table, p block elements start from group 13 till group 18.

  • Group 13 – Boron Family
  • Group 14 – Carbon Family
  • Group 15 – Nitrogen Family
  • Group 16 – Oxygen Family
  • Group 17 – Halogen Family
  • Group 18 – Noble Gases

Properties of p block elements:

  • The general electronic configuration of p-block elements is ns2np1-6 except for Helium.
  • Since p block elements have more tendency to lose electrons, they are good conductors of heat and electricity.
  • p block elements consist of both non metals and metalloids.
  • Non-metallic character of the elements increases from left to right of the periodic table.
  • Ionization energy increases from left to right of the period and decreases from top to bottom of a group.
