A plant cell differs from that of an animal cell due to the presence of an extra layer on top of the cell membrane called the cell wall.

  • This cell wall of plants consists of the primary cell wall and the secondary cell wall.

The primary cell wall is a cellulose-containing layer composed of polysaccharides and smaller proportions of glycoproteins.

  • It is a strong yet thin and flexible wall layer capable of plastic and elastic expansion.

All cell walls consist of three layers, the primary wall, the secondary wall, and the middle lamella. In due course, the primary walls disappear leading to the production of the secondary wall.
