Electricity is a natural force that has always existed throughout the universe. However, people were unaware of the phenomenon of electricity for way too long. It is more of a discovery than an invention. Through his experiments, William Gilbert discovered electricity.

In 1660, William Gilbert, an English scientist coined the term Electricity by describing the electrification of many subjects. In his experiment, it was shown that the rubbing of amber makes it a charged substance.

Benjamin Franklin
Benjamin Franklin was a famous American publisher and scientist. Many scientists experimented with static electricity but Benjamin Franklin concluded with his experiments that electricity has both positive and negative elements.
He believed that lightning is a form of electricity and that electricity flows between negative and positive elements.

In 1752, Franklin performed the kite experiment to show that lighting and the static electricity are the same things. He tied a key to a kite and flew it during a thunderstorm. From the experiment, he observed that when the thunder hit the kite, the key acted as a conductor and passed electricity through the string giving him a mild shock.
Hence, he proved that lightning is a form of flowing electricity.
After the electricity experiment, in 1879 Thomas Edison invented the electric light bulb.
