PhD in Germany Eligibility and Requirements

PhD in Germany eligibility needs a related master's degree with above-average marks and a professor who agrees to supervise you. Each university sets the detail in its doctoral regulations.

  • A master's degree in a related subject is the standard entry route.
  • Exceptionally qualified bachelor's holders can join through a fast track with an integrated master's.
  • Universities expect above-average marks; KIT asks for a good to very good degree.
  • No GRE is needed for most routes, but BGSE Bonn asks for GRE Quant 160 or above.
  • KIT expects very good English but usually asks for no IELTS or TOEFL score.
  • Structured programs such as IMPRS may set their own English test rules.
  • Most individual doctorates need a professor's written agreement to supervise you before formal admission.
  • Each university decides on its own whether to recognize your Indian degree.
  • HBIGS Heidelberg asks applicants who are not fully eligible to pass a qualifying exam first.
  • Keep ready your transcripts, CV, research proposal, motivation letter, 2 referee letters and passport.

Note: In October 2026, you have 6 weeks to draft a research proposal before the 1 December 2026 BMS deadline.

PhD in Germany Visa and APS Certificate

PhD in Germany visa options are a blocked-account study visa or a research permit tied to a work contract. Which one you get depends on how your PhD is funded.

  • The study visa needs €11,904 (INR 12.67 Lakhs) in a blocked account for one year.
  • The research permit needs a work contract with a German research institution.
  • It is issued for at least 1 year and can be extended.
  • If the research is a full-time part of a PhD program, only a study visa is issued.
  • APS India says PhD and postdoc applicants may not need an APS certificate.
  • This exemption applies only if your German university does not ask for APS verification.

Watch Out: The blocked amount equals the current BAföG maximum. A BAföG rise planned for 1 April 2027 may lift it, so check before funding.

FAQs

Ques. Is APS for PhD in Germany mandatory for Indian students?

Ans. Not always. APS India says applicants planning a PhD or postdoc project in Germany may not need an APS certificate. This exemption holds only if the German university does not ask for APS verification. So write to your target doctoral office before you pay for APS. If the university does ask, apply through APS India. Its processing time is not fixed and depends on the number of applications. Holders of some scholarships funded by German or EU public money can also be exempt.

Ques. Can I do a PhD in Germany after BTech without a master's?

Ans. Yes, through a fast track. German universities admit exceptionally qualified bachelor's holders, usually with an integrated master's phase. The Berlin Mathematical School Phase I at FU, HU and TU Berlin takes bachelor's graduates. Its scholarship round closes on 1 December 2026. BGSE Bonn runs a combined MSc and PhD for top bachelor's graduates with GRE Quant 160 or above. KIT also has special rules for highly qualified bachelor's holders. A 4-year BTech with strong marks and research work gives you the best chance.

Ques. How much is the PhD in Germany salary in INR?

Ans. A full-time TV-L E13 contract pays €4,759.37 (INR 5.07 Lakhs) a month gross. Many doctoral contracts are part-time. A 50 percent contract pays €2,379.69 (INR 2.53 Lakhs) a month. A 75 percent contract pays €3,569.53 (INR 3.80 Lakhs) a month. Tax and social insurance reduce your take-home pay. Scholarships pay less, from €1,400 (INR 1.49 Lakhs) a month under DAAD. These E13 rates apply until 28 February 2027. A 2.0 percent rise follows from 1 March 2027.

Ques. Is IELTS or GRE required for PhD in Germany?

Ans. Usually not. Most individual doctorates need no GRE. KIT, for example, expects very good English but usually asks for no IELTS or TOEFL score. Your supervisor sets the language rules in such cases. Structured programs differ. BGSE Bonn asks for GRE Quant 160 or above for its combined MSc and PhD. Some IMPRS and graduate schools ask for an English test score. Check each program page before you book a test. If you need one, book early so the score arrives before the deadline.

Ques. Can a Tier-2 city graduate get a funded PhD in Germany?

Ans. Yes. Admission depends on your degree, marks, research fit and referee letters. Each university decides on its own how it recognizes an Indian degree. So contact the doctoral office early with your transcripts. A strong master's thesis or a published paper helps you stand out. Write to professors with a short proposal linked to their recent papers. Many funded posts are E13 contracts paying €2,379.69 (INR 2.53 Lakhs) or more a month. The DAAD grant also accepts degrees up to 6 years old at its deadline.

Ques. Can I stay in Germany after my PhD?

Ans. Yes. You get up to 18 months to find a job that matches your qualification after your research post ends. With a job offer, the EU Blue Card needs €50,700 (INR 53.98 Lakhs) a year in 2026. STEM roles and degrees under 3 years old qualify at €45,934.20 (INR 48.91 Lakhs). Blue Card holders can get permanent residence after 21 months with B1 German. With A1 German, it takes 27 months. So start a German course during your PhD.
