The Legacy of Dreams

I am a student of political science. The segment of public governance and policy implementation particularly drove my interest in the field. Although the curriculum has helped me a lot in honing up my intellectual abilities, yet I believe, it encompasses minimal real world application possibilities. I am also a part of the college ritual now : Study before 15 days ahead of the arrival of exams, and enjoy the rest of the semester hitting assignments. I believe, the curriculum needs remodeling through a meticulous examination of the modern world intricacies and market demands.

Placements are overall balanced. Most placements are focused upon the commerce and science based courses. There are limited placement opportunities for students with social sciences background. Packages begin for 3 LPA to a maximum of 20 LPA. Major recruiters include Deloitte and TCS. Students become eligible for placements from the fifth semester usually. Major job profiles include technical assistant, consultant and management specialist. Almost 30% students get placed from the college. Well, I am not seeking for placements in college. I will probably go for competitive exams in my near future.

The yearly fees is 14.7k. There is no separate tuition fee or registration fee during admission. The annual fee is same across all categories across all categories, though there are scholarship schemes available for the reserved categories (one must have a certified income certificate to receive financial aid from the college) The college fees for PWD is minimal, just around 150 Rs for a year. In case of scholarships, the complete annual fee would be returned by the college.

The campus life has been quite exhilarating for me. College societies, student groups and political organizations are a major highlight in the university ecosystem. Ramjas College's annual fest "Mosaic" is one of the flagship events of the university. Other major fests include - Mecca (Hindu College), Confluence (Hansraj College), Crossroads (SRCC), Renaissance (KMC) The inter cultural environment adds up to the aesthetic beauty of the campus area. Colleges provide quality sports and extracurricular activities. Inter department and Inter college tournaments are held on a regular basis. DU lacks infrastructure due to financial incapacities. Fund allotments are irregular too. Though, the top tier colleges offer decent infrastructure and facilities. Libraries are well equipped with the required books. Overall, the social aura is academia oriented. Computer labs, projectors, seminar halls, auditoriums and science laboratories are mostly available in all colleges spread across the university. Well, the colleges in DU would give you more of a retro vibe, rather than a hue of modernity!

The university admission is now conducted through the Common university entrance test (CUET). Earlier, the admissions were conducted on a merit basis considering the 12th standard score. Students are supposed to fill a preference sheet during the admission process. (Top to bottom college preference order) Then they are allotted colleges based on the cutt offs. Cut offs are totally reliant over the no. of students applying for the college. Competition varies in different courses. Some of the most popular courses are - Political Science, English, Bcom. Their cut offs touch soaring heights. And yeah, reservation quota plays it role. That's quite obvious. In my personal experience, I placed Hindu College at the top of my preference list, but missed it with a close margin. I scored 765/800 (OBC category). Missed Hindu by 10 marks. I opted for an upgrade, but couldn't find my dream college. So, I had to stay in Ramjas College. Well, the admission process stays the same for all colleges. Clear the cut off, complete the formalities, pay the fee and get admitted. (Eligibility: 12th pass)

On average, there is one professor for every 50 students in the college. The student - faculty relationship is quite magnanimous. Professors are usually approachable. I personally liked my Political Science department faculty. Most of the professors possess self styled teaching techniques and long stretched experiences. Some professors are deemed unsatisfactory by the students as they lack experience or their teaching attitudes are not found appealing. There is one university exam at the end of every semester. There are no mid-sems. The difficulty level is moderate as most questions are often repetitive. Students can easily predict questions from the previous year question papers. The failure rate in the university exams is quite low. Though, the relevance of the course curriculum seems to stand on a lower stance. The syllabus in many aspects is outdated and needs to be revamped in order to serve the current market needs.

The college includes gym, library and medical room facilities. The canteen food is quite affordable as it is subsidized. Hostel curfews often begin from 9 pm. Though, some colleges allow for leniency in entry timings. The Campus area is quite safe. There are many bustling hangout places around, such as Kamla Nagar, Hudson Lane, and Majnu Ka Tila. Night life is a vibrant one out here, as one can witness students roaming around in the lanes, even in the night times.
