  • Academic: Four-year bachelor’s degree with 3.0 GPA or 65%+ (first class) from a recognised Indian institution
  • English proficiency (minimums): TOEFL iBT 76 (0-120 legacy scale) or 4.0 (new 1-6 band effective 21 January 2026), IELTS 6.0, or Duolingo English Test 110

  • English proficiency (minimums): TOEFL iBT 76 (legacy scale), IELTS 6.0, or Duolingo 110; SAT Reading 580 plus B average in English can substitute

Key insight: Indian applicants educated in the medium of English are not automatically exempt. University of Washington, Seattle Acceptance Rate 2027

As per University of Washington official admissions data, the Seattle campus sits in the moderately selective band for a top US public university.

Applicant GroupAcceptance Rate
Overall41.7%
International applicants35.6%

[Source: University of Washington Office of Admissions]

Programme-level admit rates run materially tighter than the university-wide figure. The Paul G. Allen School of Computer Science and Engineering, Foster School of Business and Nursing programmes are the most competitive shortlist filters for Indian applicants.

Reality check: The headline 41.7% figure covers first-year admits across all majors. Indian applicants targeting CS, business or nursing should assume single-digit or low-teen admit rates for those specific pathways. A strong SOP, quantifiable extracurriculars and above-90% Class 12 marks materially improve the odds.

Subject-wise, UW ranks inside the global top 25 for Public Health, Nursing, Oceanography and Computer Science. The Paul G. Allen School routinely places inside the US top ten for CS.

Key insight: UW’s top-100 QS placement keeps it inside the eligibility band for most Indian public sector education loan schemes and for the Ministry of External Affairs recognised university list. Recruiters in India treat UW as a first-tier US public university on par with UT Austin and the University of Michigan.

University of Washington, Seattle Placements and Career Outcomes 2027

University of Washington, Seattle does not publish a single university-wide placement rate. Each school reports its own graduate employment outcomes.

  • Foster School of Business: MBA and Business Master’s outcomes published annually in the Foster employment report; verify current median salary and placement rate on the school’s careers page
  • Paul G. Allen School of CS: Consistently strong tech employment record among US public universities; Seattle-area proximity to major cloud and software employers gives structural recruiting advantage
  • STEM Master’s graduates: OPT-eligible for 12 months plus 24-month STEM extension, giving up to 36 months of authorised US work
  • Recruiting sectors: Software and cloud technology, biomedical research, healthcare, aerospace, and management consulting (representative sectors; recruiter lists vary by school)
  • Career and Internship Center: Central support across resume workshops, mock interviews, employer expos and OPT filing assistance

Insider note: Indian STEM Master’s graduates from Allen School and Engineering consistently secure US-based roles, aided by Seattle’s dense tech employer market. Non-STEM Master’s graduates should plan for the standard 12-month OPT window and target roles in the local biotech and healthcare corridor.

University of Washington, Seattle vs Peer Universities

The peer set below covers top US public research universities Indian applicants commonly shortlist alongside UW. In-state cross-references also appear in the University of Washington vs Washington State University comparison.

UW stands out for its Seattle tech-corridor proximity and leading CS research standing. It offers a higher raw admit rate than UC Berkeley or UCLA for comparable programme quality.

Note: Peer comparison serves as a shortlist filter rather than a ranking replacement. Programme-level differences matter more than global rank when the top options sit within 30 places of each other. Compare individual departments before finalising the application list.

University of Washington, Seattle suits Indian applicants targeting a leading US public research university in a live tech corridor, willing to invest roughly ₹65 lakh in the first year for a strong STEM or business degree. Fit is highest for STEM Master’s applicants who value the 24-month OPT extension and Seattle’s cloud, biotech and healthcare employer density.

Indian-specific advantages include on-campus job access at 20 hours per week, WES-recognised credential paths, and a large India-origin alumni base across Seattle-area tech. The F-1 visa pathway allows Indian graduates to study in the USA with a clear post-study work window under standard OPT and STEM extension rules.

UW is not the right fit for undergraduates chasing merit scholarships, since central UG scholarships for international students are unavailable. Applicants seeking a lower total investment or a warmer climate should compare University of Texas at Austin as a realistic alternative on cost and Sunbelt weather.

Overview

I did not have any. I applied to uw not from abroad but from the USA since I live here! Nope. UW didnt require us to have any interviews- we just used the common application to apply to University of Washington and you got responses in March. Its close by- so I can drive to UW and come back and save money on staying on campus. Since I'm on the pre med track. uw is a great school for that and has its own med school I hope to attend! I have heard that a lot of students use this app called Handshake to get jobs and o have heard its useful. I know some family who graduated from uw and got a job at SPACEX Overall its quite an experience! Its difficult but you have to expect it to be that way. Uw is a top school for stem!

Overview

It has been an amazing experience, filled with support systems that help me accommodate academically as well as culturally and personally.

This university truly has a bit of everything. Thanks to its location, the activities and sports are not limited to what can be done on an interior building or field, but there’s a lot of water sports, hiking, skiing. There’s also groups for any interest you may have, personally I have joined the choir which is very high level. The facilities and libraries are huge and have all the resources you may need, as well as the systems of support to help you find and make good use of those resources.

Overview

The first thing I thought about when choosing a college was its marching band. In high school, I was a member of a core-style marching band. Every year we would spend weeks before school started at band camp to pour our efforts into a unique performance. We competed with other high schools and had tons of fun. Marching band was the highlight of my high school career, and I knew I had to keep being involved. The UW stood out to me for this reason. On top of its great location and academic prowess, it has one of the most entertaining college bands in the country. I applied for 3 other schools in Washington, but I knew this was my first choice. Luckily, my high school prepared me well for the application process and I was not worried. With a 3.8 GPA and AP test scores, I was sure to be accepted. Getting into the UW was exciting because I knew I would continue to pursue my musical interests as well as my academic ones.

Fees

There are scholarships available for many students on campus. The international student center probably has a lot of that information. There are many scholarships for minorities and other groups. Tuition fees increase every year but financial aid is available. I was awarded a scholarship through my major by the art history department. A great way to get scholarships is to use your good academics. That way you can apply with the work you have already done till this point.

Overview

It is a very highly respected college. My parents always wanted me to go to this college, and it is close to home. People who go to this college are able to obtain employment easily because they tend to be highly educated.

Fees

Books are around $825. Room and board run around $11,000. Tuition and fees are about $10,000 for in-state. Other expenses for me were around $3000.

Overview

Because I got in. Originally, I had planned to transfer to Western Washington University. However, after a campus visit to UW, I was in love (like many) with the campus and decided I at least wanted to apply. After hearing back, I decided I wanted to give it a shot.

Fees

Tuition is the biggest fee. There is also a quarterly fee for a quarterly bus pass. The next largest expense is off-campus housing.
