University of Michigan Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027
UMich evaluates Indian applicants on academic record, standardised tests, English proficiency, letters of recommendation and a programme-specific statement of purpose.
- PG Academic: Four-year bachelor’s degree with CGPA 7.0 to 7.5 out of 10 (recommended) for Rackham masters; a three-year degree may require an additional qualification.
- English Proficiency: TOEFL iBT minimum 84 (0-120 legacy scale) or IELTS Academic 6.5; waiver available if bachelor’s medium of instruction was English.
- Standardised Tests: GRE required or recommended for most engineering MS and PhD; GMAT or GRE for Ross MBA with a class median around 720.
- Credential Verification: WES or ECE course-by-course evaluation requested after admission in most programmes.
UG Indian applicants need Class 12 marks of 85% or above (recommended), SAT or ACT optional under the current test-flexible policy, and the same TOEFL or IELTS floor.
Key insight: Rackham does not publish a hard cutoff, but admitted Indian masters students usually clear CGPA 8.0 out of 10 at IITs, NITs or BITS, and 8.5 out of 10 from Tier-2 engineering colleges.
University of Michigan Acceptance Rate 2027
UMich reported an overall undergraduate acceptance rate of 17% for the Fall 2024 cycle, placing it among the most selective US public universities. The figure is drawn from the official Common Data Set and is the latest full-year disclosure.
| Year | Acceptance Rate | Trend |
|---|---|---|
| Fall 2024 | 17% | Steady |
| Fall 2023 | 18% | Tightening |
| Fall 2022 | 20% | Baseline |
[Source: University of Michigan Common Data Set]
Programme-level selectivity is sharper for Indian masters applicants: Ross MBA admits around 25% of applicants, while CSE MS admits in the 10% to 15% band (estimated).
Reality check: A 17% headline rate is the UG number. Indian masters applicants compete inside department-specific pools where selectivity is often tighter, so target programme fit over the headline figure.

University of Michigan Placements and Career Outcomes 2027
UMich reports strong placement outcomes across its graduate schools, with Ross and the College of Engineering publishing the deepest employment data.
- Ross MBA Employment: 93% of the Class of 2024 received job offers within three months of graduation, with a median base of USD 175,000 (INR 165.4 lakh) per year.
- Engineering MS Median: Median starting salary around USD 95,000 (INR 89.78 lakh) per year across CSE, ECE and ME programmes.
- Top Sectors: Consulting, technology, investment banking, automotive engineering and life sciences dominate the Ross and CoE outcome reports.
- Career Support: The Career Center and school-specific offices run on-campus recruiting, with over 1,000 employers visiting Ann Arbor each year.
- Indian Alumni: Notable Indian-origin alumni include leading US-based executives at Fortune 500 firms; UMich’s Alumni Association hosts active Mumbai, Delhi and Bengaluru chapters.
Insider note: Indian STEM masters students benefit from the 36-month STEM OPT window, which gives three full H-1B lottery entries and lowers the pressure of a first-cycle visa pick.
University of Michigan vs Peer Universities
Indian applicants typically pair UMich with other top US public and private research universities. The peer set below benchmarks QS rank, Collegedunia Study Abroad rank, average PG fee and primary differentiator.
| University | QS 2027 | CD Study Abroad 2026 | Avg Annual PG Fee | Differentiator |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| University of Michigan | #51 | #20 | USD 55,250 (INR 52.21 lakh) | Balanced public rate, strong Ross MBA brand |
| UC Berkeley | #19 | NA | USD 56,000 (INR 52.92 lakh) | Peer public, tighter CS admit rate |
| UCLA | #43 | NA | USD 54,000 (INR 51.03 lakh) | West-coast tech recruiting pipeline |
| Carnegie Mellon | #52 | NA | USD 60,000 (INR 56.70 lakh) | CS-first culture, higher sticker |
| Purdue | #89 | NA | USD 32,000 (INR 30.24 lakh) | Lower cost, strong engineering alumni |
UMich stands apart on cost-value: a Rackham masters costs roughly half of a private peer such as Carnegie Mellon or Northwestern, while retaining a top-25 THE global rank. Only Purdue beats it on sticker price, and that comes with a lower selectivity and lower global rank.
For Indian students targeting a US masters with the study in USA cost math as the primary filter, UMich sits in the sweet spot of public-rate tuition plus private-tier recruiting. Those unable to secure UMich often convert to Purdue or MBA universities in USA within the top 25.
UMich-Ann Arbor is the right pick for an Indian student who wants a globally ranked US public research university at a tuition well below private-peer rates, who can self-fund the first year of a Rackham masters or Ross MBA against an expected median salary of USD 95,000 to USD 175,000 (INR 89.78 to 165.4 lakh), and who values the 36-month STEM OPT window plus a large on-campus Indian community.
It is not the right pick for an Indian student needing full merit aid at the masters level, since UMich reserves most tuition waivers for doctoral candidates; a realistic alternative in that case is Purdue, which offers deeper MS funding routes at a similar engineering tier.
University of Michigan FAQs
Ques. Does the University of Michigan accept three-year Indian bachelor’s degrees?
Ans. Rackham generally requires a four-year bachelor’s degree equivalent to a US bachelor’s for admission to masters programmes. Indian three-year BA or BCom holders may need an additional qualification such as a one-year postgraduate diploma or master’s degree. Four-year BE, BTech and BBA degrees from recognised Indian universities are accepted directly. Verify requirements with the specific department before applying.
Ques. Can I work part-time on campus at UMich as an F-1 student?
Ans. Yes, F-1 students at UMich can work up to 20 hours per week on campus during term and 40 hours per week during breaks. Common roles include Graduate Student Instructor, Graduate Student Research Assistant and library or dining positions. CPT and OPT also allow off-campus internship or work authorisation during and after the programme. The International Center at Ann Arbor processes all approvals.
Ques. How much does an Indian student need for the F-1 visa financial proof?
Ans. UMich issues an I-20 after you submit proof of funds covering the first year of attendance. For a Rackham masters this means around USD 83,000 (INR 78.44 lakh) in liquid assets, loan letters or sponsor affidavits. UG applicants need around USD 95,000 (INR 89.78 lakh) in proof. Education loans from HDFC Credila, Prodigy and Avanse are commonly used by Indian students.
Ques. Is the GRE waived for UMich engineering masters?
Ans. Policies vary by department. The MS Data Science programme makes the GRE optional, while CSE and ECE have moved to a GRE-optional model but still recommend submission for applicants from lesser-known undergraduate colleges. A strong GRE around 325 strengthens funding chances. Ross MBA accepts both GMAT and GRE, with Executive Assessment allowed for part-time formats.
Ques. What is the application fee at UMich for Indian applicants?
Ans. The application fee is USD 75 (INR 7,088) for undergraduate Common Application submissions and USD 90 (INR 8,505) for most Rackham graduate programmes. Ross MBA charges USD 200 (INR 18,900) per application. Fee waivers are limited at UMich and generally not available to Indian international applicants. Payment is accepted by international credit card.
Ques. Which Indian banks offer education loans recognised by UMich?
Ans. UMich accepts loan sanction letters from HDFC Credila, Avanse, Auxilo, SBI Global Ed-Vantage, Bank of Baroda and ICICI Bank for I-20 funding proof. International lenders such as Prodigy Finance and MPOWER also finance UMich admits without an Indian co-signer. The university does not endorse specific lenders. Indian students usually combine a bank loan with family savings for the full year-one proof.
Ques. Does UMich offer conditional admission for low English scores?
Ans. UMich does not run a conditional admission pathway for applicants below the TOEFL 84 or IELTS 6.5 floor. The English Language Institute offers an Academic English Program for admitted students needing extra support, but the English test must still clear the departmental minimum at the time of application. Retaking the TOEFL or IELTS before the deadline is the recommended route.
Ques. How long does the UMich I-20 take to arrive in India after admission?
Ans. The International Center typically issues the I-20 within three to four weeks of financial document approval. Electronic I-20 delivery by email was introduced in 2023, so Indian students no longer wait on international courier. After I-20, students pay the SEVIS fee of USD 350 (INR 33,075) and book the F-1 visa interview at the US consulate in Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata or Hyderabad.

- The job market is not on your side it never was it never will be. As mentioned in the previous point, it is you who can help you. Coming to the University of Michigan does not mean you will get a job with a 100% guarantee.
- Fees is pretty high and scholarships are not provided to everyone. Please dont take huge amounts of loans to come here and study. The risk to reward ratio is quite high.
Campus Life
- Umich has the central campus and the northern campus. First or second week of the fall semester is Festifall; hundreds of organizations set up on the Diag and talk to people who might want to join. That's the best way to find something besides searching Maize Pages.
- If you have an interest, there is almost definitely an org around it. Search maize pages and send an email to them in the fall.
Fees
- My fees are as follows:
- Tuition: $58870
- Living expenses: $23310
- Book and insurance: $3777
- Total: $85957
- This is an average for 1 year (Likely goes up). This was obviously for the 2023-24 year but the credit-wise fees change every year. And also the fee structure depends upon your degree and the school or college within the university. Your best bet is getting Graduate Student Instructor or Research Assistant Roles.
Likes
- Great Infrastructure & resources
- Easy access to learned professors
- Curriculum is as close as it gets to something being used in the industry
Dislikes
- Expensive
- Your entire time is pretty much consumed by the course work (beneficial at the end of the day though)
- Campus is very vast. Getting around could prove a little difficult especially during winters
Campus Life
- It’s essentially divided into 3 sides. North campus, central campus, and south campus. However, these are just in Ann Arbour. There is U of M Dearborn and Flint as well.
- All kinds of facilities are available and mostly free to access for students. You could book yourself a ride to home late in the night as well and it’s free of charge.
- For all Indian festivals, ISA (Indian Student Association) organises an event where students gather to celebrate. There are independent private parties or celebrations as well where smaller pockets of student gather
- Recreational centres are the primary sports centres and have all the sports you could imagine. There’s heated Olympic-size pools as well.
Fees
- Sem1 was 27000 USD
- Sem 2 was 29000 USD (The tuition went up by around 10%)
- Sem 3 was 10000 USD
- A total of 30 credits
- Sem 1 and 2 I had taken 12 credits each ( 4 subjects and 3 per subject) Sem 3 was just 1 subject, I.e 3 credits and the last 3 credits were fulfilled by internship
- The fee is charged per semester; above 9 credits per semester are charged the same, so 9, 12, 15, etc. credits will be the same full semester fees of ~30000 USD. Anything less than 9 credits will be charged per credit, 3300 per credit at the time of my graduation
- Total monthly expenses could round up to 1000 USD easily, depending on if you choose to eat out a lot; that could be a lot higher

Dislikes
- Severe Weather of Ann Arbor its mostly cold half of the year
- Ann Arbor is not as developed as other US metropolitan cities
- I love the university ,don't have much to comment on the disliking , it is very inclusive, friendly and reputed university.
Campus Life
- 3 campuses , North - Mostly has Engineering Department , Central: Hospital ,Law , Human Genetics(My Department ) , it is near Downtown , much of a happening area of of Ann Arbor , South Campus has Management and Football Stadium (one of the largest Football stadium in the US ) .
- Additionally it has many libraries , and food spots , one is called Dudhastate , it has its library open 24 X 7 .
- One of the Library in my department is Tauberman Health Sciences library, it has MPRINT option for all students to free printing upto $24
Fees
- $27,360/semester, the payment needs to be done through FLYWIRE, as UM prefers only Flywire way of Payment for Education Loans especially, it is charged in 2 installments per semester , but students also have the option of paying in 5 EMI installments of tuition fees per semester as well.
- Additionally my monthly expenses comes upto $1000 , as my accommodation rent is around $600, UM health insurance charges monthly $250, and an extra $100 for grocery and other miscellaneous expenses.

- The amazing faculty in my department, they were all super talented professionals, researchers and incredibly kind, respectful. They were all very responsive too.
- Access to a lot of resources that promotes inclusivity, that are not restricted to your department alone. For example, there were people who couldn't have their own laptop, the University had a loaning program where you could use a laptop for free throughout the semester.
- Great connectivity. Ann Arbor public buses (in addition to UM buses) are free for students, the university also offers super cheap rides to the airport for holiday seasons. The International Center also offers to ride students for short trips, visiting the mall, etc sometimes.
Dislikes
- Super expensive in comparison to other colleges in the US, even though it is a public institution. You can waive off fees if you get a research assistant or teaching assistant position though (unfortunately super competitive in comparison to places like UT Austin, Georgia Tech, Purdue, UIUC etc). I got by because of that.
- Location is not great. I work in tech, there aren't a lot of opportunities in the MidWest as compared to the East and West Coasts. But attending remote networking events were my solution to this issue.
- The winters are super cold and harsh, it can get very gloomy at times, especially when the sun sets at 4PM and you have to walk back home through the snow.
Campus Life
- Three, Ann Arbor is the main campus and there is also Dearborn and Flint.
- A number of libraries (a little too many, you can study at a new library every month for two years literally), sports facilities (two recreational facilities on campus and a number of other paid options), and medical services (there is a big Michigan Medicine hospital) are available.
- Football is major here, the Michigan stadium is the biggest one in the US, so it gets super crazy during football season. You can participate in a snow fight at the Diag, go tailgating, get a lot of free food, attend opera shows, do a zipline all for free on the campus.
Fees
- It was 26,000 USD per semester (also paid semester-wise), based on the number of credits you take. So in the last semester, if you don't take a full-credit course load, then you have to pay less fess. Minimum of 9 credits and a maximum of 18 were required in one semester.
- Total required credits for the whole course were 48 to graduate. So you can take extra credits and have lesser credits in the last semester and pay less tuition, or else graduate in 3 semesters (advised if you have a job offer).

Campus Life
- Our university has 2 campuses—North and Central. All facilities are available on campus. Our campus has several events but Festifall is a huge event that introduces freshmen to various clubs and groups.
- There are clubs and bodies that host extracurricular things like painting, study teams, ice skating, outings, sports, and fitness activities to keep interesting things happening throughout.
Fees
- My semester fee is around thirty thousand dollars. My monthly expenditures are not a lot since everything is mostly provided by the university. I only have to pay rent and utilities and personal expenses such as clothing, groceries sometimes, and restaurants.
- The university is really good at hosting events, which gives us enough opportunities to get free food and other things. The transportation is also free for campus students.

Dislikes
- Only dislike is that it can be too big at times and it is very cold. Otherwise all of the above are great!

Overview
The reason I chose to go to the USA was the economic stability and a very systematic education system. It's much easier to stay here than in other countries according to me. The University of Michigan was ranked no. 4 in USA for civil engineering when I joined. However, the major factors were the course structure, flexibility in taking courses outside of the department, and research opportunities and funds. U of M being an R1 University is one of the highest funded Universities in the USA. As for the flexibility in coursework, I took half of the credits for my degree from outside of the department which gave me knowledge and insights of various other disciplines. All sorts of career opportunities can be achieved here. There are various career fairs and workshops to help students improve their resumes, network with potential employers and get well-earning jobs. The name of the University itself weighs a lot and it's not very difficult to get a job even during the recession. My overall experience in the past 2 years has been excellent and I have enjoyed my time here to the fullest. I did great in my academics, learned various subjects, networked with people, participated in various student-run organizations on campus, and made plenty of friends. My experience during my Master's was awesome and hence I decided to pursue my PhD from the same University.
Campus Life
The University of Michigan has 3 campuses, Ann Arbor, Dearborn, and Flint. In the Ann Arbor campus, there are a lot of events going on in the downtown area. There are many libraries, and more than 100 student organizations. I took part in 2 of them: the Graduate Student Advisory Council (GSAC), and Wolverine Support Network (WSN). I currently am a member of the organization Clean-up Campus. I had a lot of fun in these organs and we organized plenty of events such as bowling, lunch with faculties, game night, movie night, etc.

- Flexiblity in my research on a topic I am passionate about. Also, everyone in my lab is welcoming and helpful - no judgments. There's a lot of events ongoing that helps me network and possible collaboration opportunities among different fields.
Dislikes
- Just the winters here sometimes get very long, so the first year can be an adjustment, specially for people from our countries, since we are usually not used to long winters.
Overview
"Yes, I submitted SoP, 3 LoRs, CV. Interview for the PhD program was technical - questions about my field, and past projects. No implementation questions were asked, only conceptual. " My advisor is my most preferred advisor in my field, university also ranks well in terms of rankings and reputation. Overall experience has been really good. It is filled with diverse learning opportunities both inside and outside the classroom. The vibrant campus life, and supportive faculty, fostered an environment of growth and discovery. We can also engage in various clubs and organizations which helps develop leadership skills. Research collaboration opportunities are immense, this helps me as a PhD student to understand various perspectives of a problem I am trying to work on.
Campus Life
Campus life is also good, a feeling of connection to everyone in my cohort. They have a class for first year graduate students to connect and I found some friends from there. A lot of campus wide events happen frequently. Research facilities are amazing.
