USC applies a holistic review, with academic strength, essays and standardised test scores weighted for both undergraduate and graduate entry.

Postgraduate essentials

  • Academic: Four-year bachelor’s degree with CGPA 7.0/10 or higher (recommended); three-year Indian bachelor’s degrees are accepted for most programmes.
  • English proficiency: As per USC Graduate Admission, Masters minimums are IELTS 6.5 (6.0 in each band), TOEFL iBT 4.5 (1-6 scale) / 90 (0-120 legacy scale) with 20 in each section, PTE Academic 61, or Cambridge C1 Advanced 176.
  • GRE: Required for most Viterbi engineering programmes; Marshall MBA requires GMAT or GRE.
  • Credentials: Official transcripts sent directly by the institution; WES evaluation not mandatory but recommended for shortlisting.

Undergraduate essentials

  • Academic: Class 12 with 85% or higher (recommended); AP or IB coursework strengthens the profile.
  • English proficiency: IELTS 7.0, TOEFL iBT 5.0 (1-6 scale) / 100 (0-120 legacy scale) with 20 in each section, PTE Academic 68, or Cambridge C1 Advanced 185.
  • SAT/ACT: Test-optional for Fall 2027 first-year applicants.

Key insight: The TOEFL iBT moved to a 1-6 band scale on 21 January 2026; USC accepts both scales through 2028, but scores must be dated within 24 months of the application submission date.

University of Southern California Acceptance Rate 2027

USC posted a 9.8% acceptance rate for its most recent undergraduate cycle, placing it among the most selective private universities in the United States. The figure is officially disclosed via the USC Common Data Set and remains stable year on year.

YearAcceptance RateTrend
20269.8%Stable
202510.0% (estimated)Slightly higher

The rate reflects freshman admission across all USC schools. Cinematic Arts, Marshall Business and Viterbi Engineering typically run below the university-wide rate, while Dornsife Letters, Arts and Sciences hovers closer to it.

Reality check: Indian applicants competitive for USC typically hold Class 12 percentages above 90 or CGPA 8.5/10 with 1500+ SAT scores; strong extracurriculars matter as much as academics in USC’s holistic review.

University of Southern California vs Peer Universities

USC compares against West Coast private research peers and select East Coast universities Indian applicants shortlist alongside it.

UniversityQS Rank 2027Avg Annual PG Fee (INR lakh)Differentiator
University of Southern California#15367 lakhCinematic Arts and entertainment recruiting
UCLA#4250 lakhPublic research strength at lower cost
New York University#4072 lakhManhattan location and finance recruiting
Boston University#10860 lakhStrong CS and East Coast placement
Northeastern University#9562 lakhCo-op placement model

USC differentiates through its Viterbi engineering pipeline into Silicon Beach and unmatched cinematic arts credentials, though QS placement trails UCLA and NYU.

University of Southern California suits Indian students prioritising STEM masters with strong US industry access and the Trojan alumni network. Full-cost investment sits at roughly INR 91 lakh per year against a MS Computer Science market median of INR 91.11 lakh in year one, so ROI recovers inside three post-OPT years for high-performing graduates. The 24-month STEM OPT extension keeps Indian STEM masters holders working in the US for up to three years post-graduation via the USA study visa pathway.

USC is not the pick for Indian applicants seeking a public-university sticker price or coastal East Coast finance-first exposure; UCLA and NYU respectively suit those criteria better.

University of Southern California FAQs

Ques. What is the USC application fee for Indian applicants?

Ans. USC charges an USD 85 (INR 8,152) non-refundable application fee for undergraduate applicants and USD 90 for graduate applicants. Fee waivers apply to first-generation and low-income Common Application filers, but international applicants are generally ineligible for the waiver. Payment is made via credit card at the time of application submission through the Common Application (UG) or the USC Grad Application portal (PG).

Ques. Does USC accept three-year Indian bachelor’s degrees?

Ans. Yes, USC Graduate Admission accepts three-year Indian bachelor’s degrees for most masters programmes on a case-by-case basis, provided the degree is from a UGC-recognised university with strong grades. USC Marshall, Viterbi and Annenberg have historically admitted three-year BA and BCom holders, though Bachelor of Science candidates may need to submit additional coursework evidence. WES evaluation strengthens the case.

Ques. Can international students work part-time at USC?

Ans. F-1 visa holders at USC may work up to 20 hours per week on-campus during term and full-time during breaks. Off-campus employment requires CPT or OPT authorisation from the USC Office of International Services. STEM-designated USC masters degrees qualify for a 24-month STEM OPT extension beyond the standard 12-month OPT, giving Indian graduates up to three years of US work authorisation post-graduation.

Ques. Which USC programmes waive the GRE for Indian applicants?

Ans. USC Viterbi has waived GRE for most masters programmes including MS Computer Science, MS Applied Data Science and MS Electrical Engineering as of the Fall 2025 cycle onward. Marshall School programmes accept the GMAT Focus Edition or GRE for MBA, with GMAT still required for MS Business Analytics. Programme-specific waiver policies change annually; verify the current cycle policy on the individual programme page.

Ques. How does USC evaluate Indian Class 12 board scores?

Ans. USC Admission accepts CBSE, ISC and state board Class 12 results, with predicted or final grades submitted through the Common Application. Competitive Indian applicants typically show 85% or higher across the best-of-five boards, with strong marks in relevant subjects. AP and IB coursework strengthen the profile alongside the Indian board result. The Class 10 transcript is also required for review.

Ques. Are education loans easy to obtain for USC Indian students?

Ans. Yes, USC features on the approved-institution list of major Indian education lenders including HDFC Credila, ICICI Bank, Avanse, Auxilo and international lenders MPOWER and Prodigy Finance. Loan amounts up to INR 1.5 crore without collateral are available for USC STEM masters candidates from top Indian lenders based on academic profile and GRE score. Sanction letters are required before the USC financial documents deadline.

Ques. How competitive is USC Marshall MBA for Indian applicants?

Ans. USC Marshall’s Full-Time MBA class of 2025 admitted Indian students with a median GMAT of 720 and 4 to 6 years of work experience, primarily from engineering and consulting backgrounds. Round 1 (October) sees the highest scholarship allocation; Round 2 (January) remains competitive for Indian applicants. Interview invitations issue three to four weeks after each round deadline.

Ques. Does USC provide airport pickup for Indian international students?

Ans. USC does not run an official airport pickup service from LAX, but the Indian Students Association (ISA) coordinates a volunteer pickup programme every August through the USC ISA WhatsApp group. FlyAway shuttle service runs from LAX to Union Station in downtown LA for USD 9.75 (INR 935), with USC accessible via Metro Expo Line. Total travel time is around 90 minutes.

  • USC is located in Los Angeles. They have two campuses—one for Health Sciences and the other for all other degrees. They are located to the South and West of Downtown Los Angeles, respectively.
  • Both campuses are equipped with multiple gyms, swimming pools, libraries, football fields, basketball courts, beach volleyball courts and on-campus hospitals.
  • Spring Fest and Fall Fest happen in Spring and Fall semesters. The AIS Indian Student club hosts Holi and Diwali celebrations on a very big scale. Many other ethnicities have their own clubs and events and all are welcome to participate
  • Multiple student organizations are run in the university by students. Indian Student org, Women In Engineering org, Indian Dance Club, Book Reading club, Undergrad Student Org., etc. These clubs engage students in various club-related activities and events throughout the semester. Basketball and American Football are the most popular sports on campus, with great rivalries between schools.

  • There are alot of events happening throughout the campus every single week. USC is a very cultural university, with alot of focus on sports. You will find yourself in Movie nights, Trivia nights, sports events and all kinds of crafty experiences.
  • There are clubs for treks, running, dining. As soon as you join campus a series of Late Nigh SC events begin to welcome the new cohort, which was my favourite. Lots of photo booths and dance nights, especially the Viterbi ball!

Fees

  • The fee is to be paid every semester which amount to 20k USD appx.
  • The monthly expense which includes the rent as well as other expenses like electricity, wifi, gas, groceries can amount to 1500 USD.
  • The university is at a walkable distance so you won't have to spend much on transportation. After 6pm USC provides free Lyft until 2am for any place in a 2 mile radius, making it very easy for us as students to go to any place for any errands.
  • There are also shuttles running through the day which helps if you're not a fan of walking. The public transport is also available to USC students for free using the U-pass which will be issued upon your arrival.

Overview

I liked the program of ms in computer science and I thought that it would be a better career option that I had decided to step into. Our university also helps in making connections which is a skill that I needed to develop. Overall my college experience was great. Faculty members are helpful and always ready to support us. I'm quite disappointed about the placement but overall a great learning experience.

Overview

I enjoyed my time at USC. I felt it was academically enriching and that I learned a lot, as well as made many long term friends. The administration very often made it apparent that they cared more about money and profit than the well-being of their students, however. This is not new for USC, which has been involved with many, many scandals. Scholarship, a top film school in the world, location, extremely low acceptance rate, the greater university it was a part of, and its school spirit and prestige.

Campus life is fun; it’s a party school, the facilities are very nice, they treat athletes well, and there are some issues surrounding Greek life.

Overview

I love the unique program of Intelligence and Cyber Operations that USC offers and I thought that it would be a better career path that I had originally decided to step into. Instead of majoring in data science, I would just minor in it to apply it to a different field I was interested in -- cybersecurity. Another reason I took this offer is that USC is close to home and was a cheaper option than the other option I was deciding on. I loved that USC is a social school, built on making connections which is a skill that I needed to develop, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic. Overall my college experience at USC has been phenomenal and I definitely wouldn't change a thing. It truly is a great place and I want to make sure I can make use of it for the next three years. I know this is cliche but it is the people that make USC what USC truly is. I would love to continue meeting new people and enjoying my time at USC!

Campus Life

Campus life is always popping with USC featured events. They have this app called eventSC which has a list of many different college-wide and college-specific events. For example, I went to their Paint Night, Dance Night, Carnival Night, only to mention a few. They also have many clubs of different interests and lots of school spirit (Fight On!). They also have basketball courts, swimming pools, two gyms, and more. Lots of libraries to study in as well which includes good WiFi.

Overview

For admission I required SOP, LOR’s, CV. I mostly focused on demonstrating my past experiences and how did it align with my future program aspirations. One of the top colleges for MEM, Engineering department ranked amongst one of the top in the nation, program structure and flexibility for ex. I can take courses from Business School. It’s great overall. Good campus life with reasonable chances of getting part time job, good infrastructure facilities for recreational activities and enough libraries to make sure we study right before the exams

Overview

"I think the key in general is to ask the professors under whom you have worked to write a recommendation letter so that they can relate and write exactly what you did for LORs. For SOPs I think dictating your like and showcasing the skills required and core values of the universities to your profile makes a lot of difference. I had made it to the final round of Dartmouth just based on making my profile align with the uni values. CV: should be professional one with college and professional work properly filled. " "USC, the main reason was the tag of MEMPC for my program and it's reputation, and the second reason was the flexibility of the course to go through marshall school of business to pick and choose my course. Other factors included the location and weather as well. " I like the overall experience of the university. There's so much to learn, live and experience. It's thrill for sure can be stressful but at the same exciting to learn how to make your own path.

Ques. Should I choose USC, UIUC, or Syracuse University for my undergraduate study of architecture?

● Top Answer By Ravina Kumar on 13 Jan 21

Ans. The University of Southern California (USC) is a private university located in Los Angeles, California. The University of Illinois at Urbana – Champaign (UIUC) is a public university located in the twin cities of Urbana and Champaign. The QS World University Rankings by subject 2020 – Architecture/Build Environment is given below – University of Southern California (USC) - #51 - 100 University of Illinois at Urbana – Champaign (UIUC) - #50 Syracuse University - #101 – 150 The rankings tell you one thing and the experience of the students another. The reputation and the number of graduates from the USC School of Architecture and Syracuse University School of Architecture are far more than the graduates from the Illinois School of Architecture – UIUC. All these programs are quite close in terms of rankings as well. So academically you cannot go wrong with any of these three schools. Yet USC and Syracuse University still hold a little edge. Your choice should also depend upon the area you want to settle down after graduating. USC is located on the west coast, UIUC in the midwest and Syracuse University on the east coast. If you want to work in New York, choose Syracuse University. If you want to work in California or Los Angeles, choose USC. It is not that they are not known nationally, but most of the hiring managers, some of whom may be alumni, are located in companies closer to the university itself, thus a better chance of getting employed in that region. Also some may prefer the quiet regions of upstate New York or Illinois while some may marvel at the architectural designs in and around the city of Los Angeles. This is strictly a personal choice . Also factor in the huge and ever growing alumni network of USC, which makes it a compelling choice. If you combine all these factors, then University of Southern California (USC) emerges as a clear winner among the three for studying architecture.Read more
