Agricultural Development and the Green Revolution

Indian agriculture was subsistence-based before Independence, and Partition transferred about a third of undivided India's irrigated land to Pakistan. Output stagnated through the late 1950s until two droughts in the mid-1960s forced India to import foodgrains.
