Bachelor of Design in Animation is an undergraduate program in animation design involving components such as visual arts, drawing and storytelling employed in creation of animation work that stands out in the industry. Admission to the course can be obtained through a relevant national/ institute- level entrance examination. The average annual fee charged for the course in India ranges between INR 2 and 4 lacs. Bachelor of Design in Animation: What is it About?

The course is designed to inspire enrolled students to observe the world around them, draw directly from life to gain inspiration for characters and stories. They are encouraged to discover how to think creatively and develop ideas through multiple stages, focusing on character development, narratives and performance. They are also taught fundamental 2D and 3D animation skills to bring their stories to life.

Eligibility for Bachelor of Design in Animation:

Candidates wishing to apply for the course need to meet the following minimum eligibility criteria:

  • A 10+2/ equivalent examination with a minimum aggregate score of 55%.
  • Qualification of a relevant entrance examination conducted either on the national or institute level.

Bachelor of Design in Animation: Admission Process

The process of admission to the course varies across institutes and/ or States.

Most institutes require the candidate to qualify an entrance examination. Candidates who are currently appearing in the 10+2 or equivalent examination are also eligible to appear for these entrance examinations.

Some of such popular entrance tests held for admission to the course are:

  • NID DAT- National Institute of Design (NID) offers admissions to aspirants to the program on the basis of their performance in the NID Design Aptitude Test. Examination is conducted in two stages:
  1. Stage 1 (Preliminary): The Design Aptitude Test (DAT) conducted by NID is a 3- hour long exam with a total weightage of 100 marks. This is a pen and paper- based test. The examination comprises two parts, one consisting of Multiple Choice Objective- Type questions of 70 marks worth of weightage, and the other consisting of subjective type questions with 30 marks worth of weightage.
  2. Stage 2 (Mains): The studio test for NID admissions may comprise questions in formats such as drawing/ sketching, hands-on model making, group discussions, presentations etc. Qualifying candidates are shortlisted for the round of personal interview. 
  • Symbiosis Entrance Test for Design:

SET for Design is a design aptitude test evaluating candidates’ aptitude with respect to color, geometry, visual observations, creative thinking abilities, general design awareness, awareness on Indian culture, craft and traditions etc. The question paper consists of 150 Multiple Choice Objective- Type questions.
