Three Myths Busted
  • Myth: NEET is required for B.Sc. Microbiology. Reality: NEET is not the standard admission requirement. Admission generally uses Class 12 merit, CUET UG or university-level tests.
  • Myth: Microbiology graduates can work only in hospitals. Reality: Opportunities also exist in pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, food processing, dairy, environmental testing, research and industrial quality control.
  • Myth: A B.Sc. alone is sufficient for every research position. Reality: Entry-level laboratory and quality roles are available after graduation, but advanced research and specialist positions commonly prefer M.Sc. or PhD qualifications.

Ques. Is M.Sc. necessary after B.Sc. Microbiology?

Ans. It is not compulsory for every entry-level job, but an M.Sc. is useful for research, specialised microbiology, academic laboratories and roles requiring deeper technical expertise.

Ques. Can B.Sc. Microbiology graduates work in hospitals?

Ans. They can work in certain microbiology, research, infection-control support and laboratory roles. However, regulated diagnostic laboratory positions may specifically require Medical Laboratory Technology qualifications or other prescribed credentials.

Ques. Are government jobs available after B.Sc. Microbiology?

Ans. Opportunities can arise in public-health laboratories, research projects, food and water testing, universities and government research institutes. Eligibility differs by post, and many scientific officer or research positions require an M.Sc. or higher qualification.

Ques. Can I pursue a Ph.D. after B.Sc. Microbiology?

Ans. The common route is B.Sc. - M.Sc. Microbiology or allied discipline - Ph.D. Some four-year Honours with Research programmes may also provide pathways to Ph.D. admission subject to university and regulatory eligibility requirements.

Ques. What salary can microbiology professionals earn abroad?

Ans. Salaries vary widely by country, qualification and experience. For context, the U.S. Bureau of Labour Statistics reports a median annual wage of USD 87,990 for microbiologists in May 2025. This is an occupation-wide median, not a fresher package for an Indian B.Sc. graduate, and should not be treated as a direct placement expectation.

Ques. Is B.Sc. Microbiology suitable for students interested in pharmaceuticals and food industries?

Ans. Yes. Pharmaceutical microbiology, sterility testing, quality control, fermentation, food safety, dairy microbiology and contamination testing are major application areas covered by the discipline.

Ques. Which skills improve job prospects after B.Sc. Microbiology?

Ans. Practical skills in aseptic technique, microbial culture, staining, microscopy, sterilisation, biochemical testing, PCR basics, documentation, Good Laboratory Practices, Good Manufacturing Practices and quality-control procedures can strengthen entry-level employability.

Faculty

Faculty members in the department of life sciences are less comapred to the students. Again, not all of them are good and approachable. Good ones know exactly who they are :) FEW teachers teach well, provide notes, clarify doubts, supervises lab really well and are helpful and friendly. Otherwise there are some who are not friendly and approachable at all. faculty feedbacks aren't considered ,so the same teacher might be appointed again in the next sem inspite of complaints. Exams are conducted by MAKAUT. We have four internals (CAs) which aren't really THAT tough. CA4 which is an online mcq exam taken a week before finals is honestly unnecessary. If you study well, you can score well in finals however since the university likes making money they'll score you less intentionally to charge later and increase marks in subjects that should have brought good marks anyways.

Campus Life

one cultural fest happens each year and that is not really that good i did not enjoy. They take 800 rs for the same and not really provide any experience worth that much. Seniors will come and literally bully you into paying for the fest. Small events like freshers, farewell or prediwali are fun but you have to wear your uniform in most times. Campus life depends on the people you spend time with. Its not bad. No such technology in classrooms and it becomes terrible during summers. No AC except for auditorium or smart classroom. Library and related facilities are good. During JIS Spirit, sports and other activities happen which is nice. Clubs are not so relevant in college, depends on who are running them. Students are not interested and coordinators are biased.

Fees and Financial Aid

I am student of Bsc Microbiology and my yearly fees is 35000/-. Apart from this at the time of admission I have also paid Caution money deposit 5000/- which is refundable amount and will refund me back after completion of my course. Apart from tuition fees students need to pay Enrollment fees 1500-/(one time), Professional regulatory charge 1500/-(per year), Exam fees 2500/-(per semester) and convocation fees 3000/-(one time) in last semester. The current fees for my course Bac microbiology is 47,000/- per year.

Faculty

We are having 40 students in one batch so faculty to students ratio is good. Also faculties are very supportive and helpful, specially during lab hours they make us understand every activity and detail. For exams we are having our mid term exam during the semester going in and our End sem exam at the end if the semester. All the faculties are helpful and good in nature and Prof. Kruti Kaneriya is oneof them she is my mentor and helps me a lot with my academics.

Internships Opportunities

Many companies, research laboratories, hospitals, pharmaceutical industries, and biotechnology firms offer internship opportunities to students. Common roles offered during internships include Research Intern, Laboratory Assistant, Quality Control Intern, Microbiology Intern, Clinical Lab Trainee, and Biotechnology Trainee. Some internships provide stipends depending on the organization, duration, and student performance, while others mainly focus on training and practical exposure.

Faculty

There are usually two internal exams and one final university exam in each semester. The exams are moderate in difficulty; students who study regularly can clear them easily. A small number of students fail mainly because of irregular attendance or lack of preparation. The course curriculum is relevant and includes both theoretical and practical knowledge, which helps students build a strong foundation and prepares them for higher studies, research, and industry opportunities.

The best faculty along my college is Mrs. Ekta Desai she is a common english teacher for all science students as well as for commernce ans arts students - she is the one who helps +guide everyone . Sharma madam is vey old facilty and is very honest and respectful ; but she alwys has a hilarious tone towards every students and speak insulting words . Per semester thier are usually 2 exams 1 internal exams +practical exam and 2 external exams +practicals . Usually 7:10 ratio of students fail. Admission fees is first semester fees itself.Lab fees , stationary fees and others including around rs.3000 for 3years. Fees is not based on community reservation but based on merit. Merit students have fees concession for around rs.2000. Merit based scholarship available but the application process takes long time and my classmates don't get that because before approval of scholarship,we are passed out.Few students got their Sc scholarship and Tamil Nadu Government scholarships .

Faculty

Faculty to student ratio is quite low . Relationship bw us is very good and faculties are answering well while we approaching. I don't personally like or hate any faculties because no one has the entire quality of what I expected. But their lectures are understandable. Exams are easy to moderate in level. While some failed to clear, the number is varied bw departments. In my department of microbiology,2 to 4 students out of 42 are failed

Faculty

Faculty to student ratio was a very typical thing. In my entire college life. Teachers are so rude and very minimum number of teachers are cool and understanding. I didn't like Vidya Mam and of the teacher. I do not want to lick the name but Vidya Mam so bad things to me, she, she always scold me, always scold everyone in the class pics for silly reasons. I like Sangeethavani Mam. We had to exams in a year and we had test between every semester. they were easy and understandable for our care.

Campus Life

The college had very very nice annual festivals and function festivals, name, Aarambh, Maitri and many freshers Day competitions and always there were us function in their mainly the biggest nicest function in our college with Srishti, which was celebrated after the second semester. Exam structure includes- 40 (internal)+60 (theory marks) Internal: interim exams of 20 marks each which are computer based tests of 20 marks for each subject for a time span of 20 minutes. After which there are presentation that have 10 marks and 10 for assignments. Faculty are helpful in solving your doubts related to anything and everything. Exams are moderate to difficult; studying a day before exam may pass you but wont provide you with good marks unless if thats what you want. Most of the faculties have more than 15 years of experience in teaching and most of them are Phd holders or post graduates in the particular field of research. The department is one of the oldest in Mumbai and is honored as top 3 microbiology department in India by the microbiologist`s society of India. It was a matter of liking or disliking any of the profesors as we all knew even if thet scold us it is for our own benefit so that we could push ourselves in doing something better. However, some of the new teaching facutly that recently joined the department are not good. They dont even know basics of how to give a presentation or how to actually teach degree students. They just come and read from the slides without making us understans..rather even they didnt know many a things when we used to ask them any question or doubt.

Fees and Financial Aid

Year wise fee structure: First year fees-8,800 Second year fees- 8,546 Third year fees-14,269 Lab fees, library fees, registration fees are all included in the yearly fees that the student has to pay. However, breakage fees that are taken compulsorily from each student whether or not he/she has broken any instruement is taken separately by each departments for which the student receives a receipt from the respective departments. Each lab`s breakage fees are separate. Yes, the college also provides scholarships for students who are bright. Merit based grants as well as minority-specific scholarships are available though i dont know the name of it. The scholarships amount mostly ranges from 10,000 to upto 2 lakhs on an average.

There are MANYYY festivals in ruia such as starting with monsoon sports , rose day , vidyarthyancha raja ( ganpati fest of 10 days ) , lavanya , ringan, kaleidoscope, aarohan , colosseun etc . To manage and do these kind of numerous festivals they also have 10 teams such as team publicity ( does the decorating arts and craft work for every coming fest ) , team Infrastructure ( which hangs and sticks the decor all over the college premises) , team security ( again it is considered the biggest team of ruia having a strict 100 volunteers policy , they do all the frisking and making sure that everyone follows the given rules and conduct of the particular fest . They also accompany the big celebrities who visit ruia on the fest day ) team crisis management ( they manage crisis or any conflict caused during the main event / fest ) team literary arts ( they mainly focus on performing literature and art and poetry , story telling on the stage at the event ) team fine arts ( they help at making some decor items for the event ) team performing arts ( they focus on performing their talent , arts such as dancing, singing various forms on stage at the event ) team The celeb management ( they focus on bringing various celebrities for the ruia events and fests) team hospitality ( they take care of everyone during the college event such as providing everyone with water , glucose or some bandages and cure aid if any accident, team protocol ( who bring various sponsors to fund our event ) team RCL ( ruia contingent leaders who conduct and manage the intercollegiate events of ruia or ruia students taking part in other college events or competitions ) . I am in team publicity and absolutely love the team and the work they do of lighting every event with the same love and light , the people around me are also very loyal and helping which definitely makes my experience amazing. You as a person also can grow alot if you join any particular team or society which forces you to socialise

Faculty

the faculty behind evey subject is aroud 2-3 which is pretty good as they can pay nice attention to a class of 60 kids . Faculty to student ratio is adequate. I think the best faculties would be of the chemistry department. microbiology department is also not very strict but enough strict in order for students to actually pay attention and learn as the subject itself is a little complicated. There are yearly 2 semesters in which they include internals (assignment ) , unif test , practicals (journal ) and main sem exams . The hardness level of the exams do vary from subject but are usually easily clearable, although if failed in some particular subjects , ruia also conducte KT clearing exams every sem .

Placement Experience

While coming to our college about from our department other department students will get more placement opportunities in the campus and coming to our core there is no such placements in our college because of they will increase the students to pursue there further higher studies that's why they didn't get any campus placement for our course and for other students there are so many companies that they visit or college and give job of percentage to the students and coming to the passion of students getting placements in our college it will be around 60 percentage and I choose to do my MSc in microbiology in Andhra University after this BSc degree course in my college

Faculty

The student and faculty relationship is very healthy in my college and the faculty in my college are very friendly and very professional towards their profession and their very knowledged persons. I like all the faculty in my college as they are very friendly as I said and they will clear all the doubts of the students immediately and also the help to build your career in a right path. Coming to the examination the exams that my college conduct will be not that much easy and little moderately difficult because they will fully focus on the depth of the syllabus and I think there are very less student that will fail in the exams

Ques. Which one is better for a BSc in microbiology Ram Lal Anand College or Swami Shraddhanand College?

● Top Answer By Veena Dutta on 04 Oct 21

Ans. The better choice would definitely be Ram Lal Anand College after what I have learned from my friends studying there. The campus might not be as extravagant as other colleges, but if you want to study microbes, Ram Lal Anand College is the best choice. The reasons to choose this college over Swami Shraddhanand College are as follows: The best microbiology course offered by Delhi University. It is a really underrated college. Thus you may not hear about it in discussions. The students from this college have got their research papers printed in international papers. The faculty is highly experienced at the University of Delhi in Microbiology and they guide you at every single step of your course. Categories B.Sc. Microbiology at Ram Lal Anand College Swami Shraddhanand College Course Fee 36,465 36,225 Placement Percentage 60-75% - Highest CTC 16 LPA 12 LPA Average CTC 5 LPA 3.5 LPA So I would say Ram Lal Anand College over Swami Shraddhanand College any day.
