On the leaf or a stem, a female butterfly lays her egg and starts the butterfly life cycle.

  • The egg is tiny, cylindrical, or oval.

2) Stage 2 - The Larva (Caterpillar)

The caterpillar that hatches in the previous stages goes on an eating rampage in stage 2 of the butterfly life cycle.

  • After hatching, the caterpillar eats constantly as it is extremely hungry.
  • It first eats its way out of the egg and then eats plants in the outside world.
  • The caterpillar eats, molts, and repeats the process constantly at this stage.

3) Stage 3 - The Pupa (Chrysalis)

In stage 3 of the life cycle of a butterfly, the caterpillar develops a vessel known as the pupa around it.

  • The caterpillar continues to develop and grow inside the pupa.
  • The pupa creates skins around the vessel making the exterior hard.
  • The chrysalis protects the pupa till it develops into a butterfly and finally breaks out of the vessel.

4) Stage 4 - The Adult

The chrysalis breaks out of the vessel when it transforms into an adult with colorful scaly wings.

The wings are initially folded against the butterfly’s body due to its brittle nature.

Once blood begins to pump in the wings, the butterfly starts flying in search of food and mates for reproduction.

Once the mating is completed, the female butterfly lay her eggs on a flat surface or a leaf from where the whole butterfly life cycle starts all over again.

Butterflies are cold-blooded insects. They require external temperatures to maintain their body temperature. In extremely cold temperatures, the butterfly spreads its wings on a rock, leaf, or pile of mud to maintain its body heat.
