It is essential to understand how various living organisms which vary in shapes, sizes, characteristics coexist in the environment. It is important to study population in order to understand the basis of relationships between each and every living organism.

In nature, all animals and their populations interact to some extent. This is a measure of how well an ecosystem works! Typically, this type of population interaction occurs between two distinct animal populations. These interactions may be beneficial, neutral, or even negative. As a result, there are six different types of population interactions. 

The headings below describe the different ways that populations of two different species interact with one another.

  • Mutualism 

Mutualism is a relationship between members of two species that profit from each other but cannot exist independently under neutral conditions. Termites and flagellates, for example.

Plants require specific agents for pollination and seed dispersal. These agents are the creatures. Animals are rewarded with nectar or berries from the plants in return. However, many traitorous species do not pay off with other species, such as in mutualism. As a result, species coevolution occurs.

  • Competition 

As closely related species compete for scarce resources, there is competition between them. Rivalry is the term for such experiences. the rivalry This resource battle may also occur between different groups.

Even if the availability of resources is infinite, competition will arise. Here, the superiority of one species over the other is crucial. In the existence of one population species, the other population species could not effectively utilize the resources. However, if the dominant species is eradicated, the remaining species would be able to fully use the resources.

  • Predation 

A predation is a form of interaction in which one species catches, kills, and consumes the other.

Without predators, the prey population will be out of control. Predators also help to keep a population's species diversity. The level of prey species competition is reduced. Furthermore, several techniques have been developed to mitigate the effects of predation.

  • Parasitism 

Parasitism is a relationship between two organisms of different sizes and species in which the smaller one benefits while the larger one suffers.

This is an association between populations that clearly display a parasite-like eating pattern, with one species completely reliant on the other for all of its meals and nutrient requirements. Parasitic behavior has been observed in a variety of taxonomic groups, ranging from plants to higher vertebrates.

  • Commensalism 

Commensalism describes a relationship between members of two species in which one benefits while the other is largely unaffected. Pilotfish and sharks, for example. 

During this type of integration, one species population may benefit from the other species population. The population of other animals, on the other hand, is neither beneficial nor harmful. As you traveled through rural areas, you saw several birds clinging to cattle. This is a fantastic example of commensalism in action. 

In this situation, neither the livestock nor the environment will benefit or be harmed. The tiny insects concealed in the grass, however, are pushed as the bovine runs. These insects provide food for the birds, who benefit greatly as a result.

  • Amensalism 

Amensalism is a form of interaction in which one species uses its toxic secretion to damage another species, often without benefiting from the interaction. Molds, for example. 

In this type of inter-group interaction, one population suffers while the other is unaffected. Amensalism is when the larger and broader plants inhale the growth of the smaller ones around them. Some plants secrete substances that prevent nearby plants from growing. You may also destroy them to properly end the rivalry.

Types of relationships shared between species:

  • Intraspecific relationships are those that exist between organisms of the same genus. 
  • Interspecific relationship is a term used to describe a relationship between two or more related species.
  • Antibiosis is the total or partial inhibition or death of one organism by another due to the processing of certain substances or changes in the environment by metabolic pathways.
