NCERT Solutions for Class 10 English Footprints Without Feet Chapter 2 The Thief’s Story Summary
- The Thief’s Story, by Ruskin Bond, is about a fifteen-year-old boy, Hari Singh.
- Hari Singh befriended people to rob them. He met Anil, a twenty-five-year-old man, during a wrestling contest. Anil, who was a writer, made a living through his writing expertise.
- Hari befriended him and asked whether he could work for him. Soon, Anil asked Hari whether he knew how to cook and he responded affirmatively.
- Upon hearing this, Anil taught Hari to cook better meals, add numbers, read and write. He even tipped a rupee to Hari for his great endeavours.
- One day, Anil received money for all his published articles and decided to keep it under his mattress. During midnight, Hari covertly slipped his hand under the mattress, as Anil was fast asleep, and stole the money.
- Upon stealing, he immediately left to board a train to Lucknow but missed it when he reached. He started ambling the streets as the rain gradually drenched him.
- He immediately regretted his decision and felt guilt surge through him when he thought how badly he cheated a man who taught him cooking, reading, writing and even adding numbers.
- Hari decided to return the soggy notes to where it belonged. The next morning, Anil offered Hari fifty rupees and told him that he had earned the amount.
- Hari found the notes as damp as they were the previous day and realised that Anil knew about his misdemeanour. He was surprised that Anil didn’t hand him over to the police or show disgust upon realising.
- After this event, Hari Singh decided to redeem himself and become as honest as Anil was.
