What is JIPMER 2026?
JIPMER (Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research) is one of India’s top medical institutions, located in Puducherry, with a second campus at Karaikal. It was founded in 1823 as the Ecole de Médecine de Pondichéry and was granted Institute of National Importance (INI) status in 2008 under the JIPMER Act. The institute functions under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India.
JIPMER 2026 admissions cover undergraduate, postgraduate, super-specialty, fellowship, certificate, doctoral, and nursing programmes. JIPMER MBBS admissions are now done through NEET UG, MD/MS courses use NEET PG, and DM/MCh super-specialty seats are filled through NEET SS. For Post Doctoral Fellowship (PDF), Post Doctoral Certificate Course (PDCC), Ph.D, BSc Nursing, and Allied Health Sciences, JIPMER conducts its own entrance examinations.
For 2026, JIPMER has around 200 MBBS seats, more than 270 MD/MS seats, and over 70 PDF/PDCC seats across various super-specialties. You should be aware that JIPMER no longer holds a separate JIPMER MBBS entrance exam — this was discontinued from 2020 onwards when NEET UG became the single entrance for medical admissions in India. This makes it one of the most sought-after government medical institutes in the country.
