JIPMER Eligibility 2019, Age Limit, Reservation and Seat Intake

JIPMER MBBS Eligibility and Reservation: Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) is an Institution of National Importance, ranking among the best five medical schools in the country. The MBBS program at JIPMER has an intake capacity of 200 (150 seats at Puducherry campus + 50 seats at the new Karaikal campus) and enrolls students via annual entrance examination.

This year, JIPMER 2019 is scheduled on June 2 in two shifts viz morning and evening. The exam will be conducted in online (computer-based) mode, having 200 MCQs. CheckJIPMER Exam Pattern

JIPMER Eligibility Criteria

Candidates applying for JIPMER MBBS Entrance Test have to fulfill the following eligibility conditions:

  • Nationality - The applicant should be a citizen of India or a registered OCI.
  • Age Limit - Should be of at least 17 years as on December 31, 2019. No upper age limit is specified.
  • Qualifying Examination - Should have completed 12th Board Examination, having studied Physics, Chemistry, Biology/ Biotechnology (including practical tests) or any other elective with English as a compulsory subject.
  • Marks in Qualifying Examination - The General (UR) or EWS category applicants must have scored a minimum aggregate of 50% in Physics, Chemistry, Biology/ Biotechnology at the qualifying examination (40% for SC/ST/OBC/PWD category candidates and 45% for General Category Persons with Disability)
  • Applicants appearing for the qualifying examination in 2019 or expecting results are also eligible to apply.

Horizontal Reservation Structure

As per Government directive, 5% of seats are reserved horizontally for Persons with Disability (PWD).

Note: All candidates, irrespective of claims for reservation has to appear for the common entrance examination and seats will be allotted as per merit order.

Explanation of all the Categories:

Now, let us decipher the exact meanings of the afore-mentioned reservation categories:

A General or Unreserved candidate is an Indian nationals fulfilling the eligibility conditions as prescribed by the Medical Council of India.

Other Backward Class (OBC) (Non-Creamy Layer) refers to applicants that do not belong to the sections specified in Column 3 of the Schedule to the Government of India. The complete central list of OBC sections can be accessed at http://www.ncbc.nic.in/User_Panel/CentralListStateView.aspx

Candidates claiming reservation under this category must produce supporting certificate in the specified format (Annexure II) during counseling. Please note that the certificate produced should be older than 1 year at the time of first counseling.

Scheduled Caste (SC)/ Scheduled Tribe (ST) applicants are required to produce the necessary certificate in the format provided (Annexure III) in support of their reservation claim.

Economically Weaker Sections (EWSs) category has been added as per recent GoI directives. Applicants not covered under the provisions of SC, ST and OBC categories with family gross annual income below INR 8.0 lakh has been identified as EWS by the Government of India for the benefit of reservation. Candidate belonging to the SC/ST/OBC categories are not eligible to apply under the EWS category

Candidates claiming reservation under the EWS category must submit the family’s Income & Asset Certificate in the prescribed format as given in the JIPMER Prospectus. Check now!

Please note that as per Government directives for EWS reservation:

Income, in case of EWS category, includes all earnings salary, agriculture, business, profession, etc. for the financial year prior to the year of application. Applicants whose family owns or possesses any of the following assets, will not be considered for reservation under the EWS category, irrespective of the family income:

  • 5 acres of agricultural land and above;
  • Residential flat of 1000 sq. ft. and above;
  • Residential plot of 100 sq. yards and above in notified municipalities;
  • Residential plot of 200 sq. yards and above in areas other than the notified municipalities.

The property held by a "Family" of an applicant, in different locations will be clubbed together while applying the property-holding test to determine EWS status.

The term "Family" includes the applicant seeking the benefits of reservation, the said applicant’s parents and siblings below the age of 18 years, as well as the spouse of the applicant and children below the age of 18 years.

Fact: JIPMER and AIIMS are the two institutes throughout the country who have their own entrance exams for MBBS. All the other institute in India conduct their MBBS admissions via NEET exam.

Puducherry Domicile Category Criteria:

An applicant is considered to belong to the UT of Puducherry (P-UR), provided at least one of the following domicile criteria is satisfied:

The candidate or either parent or guardian in case of a candidate who has lost both parents has been residing continuously in Puducherry for at least five years immediately preceding the closing date of application.

Candidates who have passed 10th/12th Board Exam or any other public examination in the UT and for that purpose had undergone academic studies continuously for 5 successive classes immediately preceding the qualifying examination in recognized educational institutions and residing in the UT continuously during that period.

Candidates whose parent/ parents are Central Government employees/ State Government employees/ Defense Personnel/ Central Paramilitary Forces/ Employees of PSUs, and are posted and serving in the Puducherry UT for at least a continuous period of three years immediately prior to the last date of application; and such candidates should have studied and completed the 12th Board exam from a school in the UT.

Puducherry – Unreserved (P-UR) – A Puducherry-Unreserved (P-UR) candidate is someone who satisfies the domicile criteria of the Union Territory of Puducherry. Such a candidate has to submit a supporting document in prescribed format in support of their domicile claim (Annexure – V)

Puducherry - Other Backward Classes (P-OBC)– Candidates who satisfy the criteria specified for OBC-NCL category as well as at least one Puducherry-UT domicile criteria.

Puducherry - Scheduled Caste (P-SC)/ Puducherry - Scheduled Tribe (P-ST) - Candidates who satisfy the criteria specified for SC/ ST category as well as at least one Puducherry-UT domicile criteria.

Puducherry - Economically Weaker Sections (P-EWSs) - Candidates who satisfy the criteria specified for EWS category as well as at least one Puducherry-UT domicile criteria.

Puducherry - Persons with Disability (P-PwD) - Candidates who satisfy the criteria specified for PwD category as well as at least one Puducherry-UT domicile criteria.

Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) registered under Section 7A of Citizenship Act 1955 & Non-Resident Indians (NRI) are required to submit proof of Registration as OCI/ NRI issued by the Competent Authority at the time of admission

Persons with Disability (PWD) - The eligibility of candidates to pursue a program in medicine with a specified disability is in accordance with MCI directives. The minimum degree of disability ((Benchmark Disability) is 40% in order to be considered eligible for availing reservation under PwD category. The disability percentage of selected candidates is assessed by JIPMER Medical Board. The disability certificate has to be uploaded along with the online application form.
