The s-Block Elements are the elements in which all intrinsic electron shells are completely occupied, and the last valence electron moves into the s-orbital of the external shell. These elements are segregated as 'alkali metals' and 'alkaline earth metals based on having 1 electron (ns¹) and 2 electrons (ns²) in their outermost orbitals, respectively.

Alkali metals acquire their name after the Arabic word, "al-qis," which is synonymous with plant ash, that is is enriched with carbonates of potassium and sodium. Examples of alkali metals are Lithium (Li), Potassium (K), Sodium (Na), Cesium (Cs), Rubidium (Rb) & Francium (Fr). As the name suggests, oxides of alkaline earth metals have alkaline properties. These elements form basic solutions in water and naturally occur in the earth's crust. Examples of alkaline earth metals are Magnesium (Mg), Beryllium (Be), Barium (Ba), Calcium (Ca), Strontium (Sr) & Radium (Ra).
