The Hack Driver, by Sinclair Lewis, is a story about a lawyer who worked as a junior assistant clerk in a renowned law firm post-graduation.
He usually disliked serving summons as it brought several unforeseen events
One day, he visited a village, New Mullion, to serve a summon to Oliver Lutkins. The village was very lifeless.
Soon, he crossed roads with a cheerful hack driver at the railway station. The lawyer learned that Lutkins previously borrowed funds from several people from the hack driver.
The hack driver, Bill Magnuson, asked the motive behind the lawyer's visit. In no time, the ignorant lawyer responded that he had a court summon for Lutkins.
The lawyer, then, rented Bill's hack to visit Lutkins. They visited various places as Bill offered to assist the lawyer to locate Lutkins.
First, they visited Fritz's shop in a hunt for Lutkins and then to Gustaff.
Later in the day, someone guided them to visit the pool room as they didn't find Lutkins at Gustaff too.
However, they missed Lutkins as he left only five minutes before they arrived.
The lawyer and Bill soon had lunch at Wade's as it was midday.
Later, they also paid a visit to Lutkins' mother's house and immediately left as his mother came chasing with a hot iron.
Soon it was time to leave and the lawyer hopped on the train and paid Bill for the ride.
He was criticised upon reaching by his chief and sent him to the village again the next day, now with a colleague who knew Lutkins.
Upon reaching, the lawyer greeted Bill and it immediately shocked his colleague as this man was Oliver Lutkins himself. The lawyer was immediately ashamed upon learning the truth.
