Course Curriculum Overview
The English Hons. curriculum of University of Delhi is carefully put together, it introduces students to a diverse collection of literature eras, styles, genres and pieces. The inclusivity of all kinds of literature is really wonderful to see as it allows us to have a better understanding of the world. The curriculum supports critical thinking and gives chance to apply the learings in real life. It is a great course for readers as it involves taking in a lot of material in form of essays, research papers, novels, stories etc. Teachers should take classes consisently to ensure no topics or units are left to complete as studying deep and intricate texts becomes extremely difficult for the student to do on their own. The use if assignments and assessments is a good way to support the lectures and classes as they help to look more into the material available and gain a stronger understanding. Some subjects could use cut down on amount of pieces as it can get heavy from exam point of view. The exam structure sometimes fails to use the whole syllabus to question the student's level of understanding.
Placement Experience
Students become eligible for placements as interns from 2nd year onwards and as permanent employees from 3rd year. Placement drives take place time to time which invite several companies. Most students in Bachelor courses of Arts go for Masters after getting their degree. The New Education Policy offers more options such as research endeavours or even applying for a PhD directly after a four year degree is recieved. Corporate opportunities are also available.
Fees and Financial Aid
For a General category student studying without any scholarships, the college fees is taken on an annual basis. Fees for most Bachelor of Arts courses lies between 14,000 to 18,000 per year. As a student of English Honours, yearly fees personally paid have been 13,890, 14,000 and 16,520 for year 1, 2 and 3 respectively. Besides the college fees, I have only paid exam fees every semester which has ranged between 800 and 1200 depending on the amount of practical papers in my selection. No other payment has ever been taken on the official level from the college's side.
Campus Life
Campus life at University of Delhi is ectremely active. There are several clubs and socities delving into a plethora of interests and fields, with each college having their own entities of different areas of interest. Annual fests are a common event in all colleges which are large scale events providing a space for youhful fun and social interaction. All societies and clubs organize events and competitions on inter and intra college level which promise a lot of learning space, earning opportunities. Colleges support these activities by providing guidance in form of teacher conveners and infrastructure of the college. The Principal of ARSDC, UoD encourages such events and competitions as well as participation of students in them. The college infrastructure has seen a lot of improvement in recent years with better environment in the canteen, big library. There is a bit of mismanagement of assignment of classrooms. The Student Unions and Council of other student run social groups, clubs are very supportive and motivated to create a better place for the students to study, have fun and thrive.
Admission
To get admission in University of Delhi, one has to appear in the CUET exam both at the UG and PG levels. Once scores from the entrance exam are received, candidate has to apply in the admission cycle of university by entering required details, score and preference list of the colleges which offer the course you may want to study. All colleges in University of Delhi offer a wide variety of courses across all streams and fields. One can choose to apply in multiple courses at multiple courses. They may get selected one or more colleges on the basis of their scores. If they get selected by multiple colleges, they can choose which option they want to go for otherwise they may have to take the only option provided. They can choose to Upgrade or Keep the college alloted during the counselling process which is common for all University of Delhi courses. Applying for English Honours, I curated a preference list on the basis of my understading of top colleges of UoD and was lucky enough to get one of the top colleges of South Campus. The preferences above the one I got alloted were all in North Campus. Possibly what went wrong was the score I achieved was not enough to make it the list of North Campus colleges.
Faculty
The course structure is very evenly designed to take place over 4 to 5 months time but often a lot of days are taken up by cultural events and lesser time is left for actual classes. If classes are taken timely, it can ensure proper enrichment, taking in all the things that are being taught. Exams take place twice in a year, at the end of each semester. Other than theory exams, practical tests and exams are scheduled a week before theory exams. Time to time class tests, presentations and activities also take place throughout the semester. The total score is divided into theory exam's scores and internal marking on assignments and assessments done by the faculty. Most teachers of the Department of English at ARSDC, UoD are very insighful and respectful. There is a good mix of new, younger teachers and experienced, senior teachers who are well educated in their areas as well as work to add to academia through research and pieces of their own. Classes of some teachers are out of the world, they really bring out new perspectives out and open eyes of students of the different planes of thinking. Some teachers may seem annoying for their lack of respect for students' time and efforts. Often teachers cancel classes minutes before scheduled time which is very strenous for students who travel hours to get to college.
Night Life
South Campus of UoD is supported by a vibrant student life in a nearby neighbourhood, Satya Niketan. ARSDC specifically does not offer hostel services like many South Campus colleges but Satya Niketan is a student pakced area with a market mouded to benefit the student crowd. There is availability of all services around the college.
