IELTS has corrected 62,794 test results after a computer-marking error, with Ofqual fining Cambridge English £875,000 on June 11, 2026. The correction hits Indian students whose university admission files or UK visa applications relied on a wrong band score. Ofqual said the automated marking failure ran undetected from August 24, 2023 to September 2025. Of the qualification-level corrections, 20,602 were upward, and 1,115 were downward. The scoring failure surfaced only in September 2025, when internal checks flagged inconsistencies in automated marking. Cambridge English then began contacting affected candidates and universities. Ofqual’s fine follows a full compliance review.

  • The error affected candidates worldwide who sat the computer-delivered IELTS, across a two-year window covering roughly 7.7 million test instances.
  • Most affected candidates saw a 0.5 band revision on listening or reading; two candidates received a full band increase.
  • Cambridge English has issued 26,246 refunds and offered 1,145 resits, with more than £6 million spent on corrective work.

What it looked like for a real candidate: a Hanoi university student told VnExpress her February results email arrived months later, saying her scores had been wrong, with her Reading band jumping on re-marking. Affected candidates were offered a full refund or a free retake, old scores were invalidated, and IELTS sent explanation letters where results had already gone to universities or visa offices.

What Went Wrong With IELTS Computer-Based Scoring?

Ofqual’s investigation found that the automated marking system for the listening and reading components failed silently. The failure sat inside the test’s computer-delivered pipeline. It went unnoticed for two years and one month.

Cambridge English processes nearly 7.7 million IELTS test instances a year. Within the affected window, 93,865 individual responses were incorrectly marked. That flowed into 62,794 candidates getting a wrong component or overall band.

Note: The error skewed heavily one way. Roughly 18 out of every 19 corrections raised a candidate’s band, not lowered it. The system was under-marking honest test-takers, not overpaying them.

Who Among Indian Students Is Affected?

India is the largest single sender of IELTS candidates globally. Any Indian test-taker who sat the computer-delivered IELTS between August 24, 2023 and September 2025 falls inside the affected window. Paper-based sittings were not touched.

Three groups face live consequences right now:

  • Fall 2024 and Fall 2025 admits whose offer letters were built around a listening or reading band that may have been under-reported.
  • UK Student Visa applicants whose CAS was pegged to a score just at or below the university’s minimum, where a 0.5 band lift changes the eligibility maths.
  • Skilled Worker and Graduate route holders who used an IELTS band for their English-language proof and are now stacking towards ILR.
The correction pattern: every overall change moved by exactly 0.5 bands, up or down, except two candidates who gained a full point. Most revised scores went up, meaning thousands had been under-scored, while 1,115 people saw inflated results pulled down.

How Do You Check if Your IELTS Score Was Corrected?

Cambridge English is contacting affected candidates directly at the email registered against the test booking. If your score changed, the notification includes a revised Test Report Form (TRF).

  1. Search your inbox for messages from Cambridge English or your local IELTS test centre dated after September 2025.
  2. Log in to your original test booking account and pull the latest TRF on file.
  3. If your registered email has changed, contact the British Council or IDP centre where you sat the test, quoting your original candidate number.
  4. Cross-check every band (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking, Overall) against the original TRF you submitted to universities.

What it means for Indian Students: A revision of just 0.5 band can unlock a scholarship threshold, a course prerequisite, or a UK visa English-language waiver. Do not assume "small change, no impact" until you have re-checked every downstream file.

What if Your University or UK Visa File Used the Old Score?

A revised TRF is only useful if the receiving institution swaps it in. That effort sits with the candidate, not Cambridge English.

Where Old Score Was Used Action Now
UK / US / Australian university offer Email the admissions office with the revised TRF and request a rewrite of the offer or scholarship tier.
UK Student Visa (already granted) No fresh action needed if the visa was issued; keep the revised TRF on file for future extensions.
UK Skilled Worker or Graduate Visa Store the revised TRF against your Home Office record for future ILR applications.
Pending university application Ask the admissions team to replace the TRF before the decision is issued.
Rejected application from 2024 or 2025 Request a re-review if the revised band now meets the cutoff.

Ofqual’s Fine and Cambridge English’s Response

Ofqual announced the £875,000 penalty on June 11, 2026. Amanda Swann, Ofqual’s executive director for delivery, said: "Tens of thousands of people took these tests with the expectation of accurate results which influence important decisions." A Cambridge English spokesperson responded: "We apologise to those affected, and we take responsibility for the error that resulted in some people receiving incorrect results." The organisation has logged 270 formal complaints, of which 24 were upheld.

Remediation spend has crossed £6 million across refunds, resits, customer support and system fixes. Cambridge English told regulators the underlying IELTS Academic marking pipeline has been rebuilt with a second-layer validation check.

Important Distinction: The fine is a regulatory penalty, not a compensation pool for candidates. Individual redress runs through the refund and resit route, not through the Ofqual fine.

Action Plan for Indian Candidates

  1. Confirm whether your test date falls between August 24, 2023 and September 2025 and whether it was computer-delivered.
  2. Pull your current TRF from the IELTS candidate portal and match band-by-band with the copy you submitted earlier.
  3. If any band has moved, download the revised TRF PDF from the portal.
  4. Email your university’s admissions office and, where relevant, your visa advisor with the revised document.
  5. If you have not received a notification but sat a computer-based test in the window, write to your British Council or IDP centre requesting a marking review.

The IELTS score-correction episode leaves Indian students with a narrow but real housekeeping task. A quiet 0.5 band revision can shift a scholarship bracket, an offer condition, or a visa English waiver. Move on it before the next admissions cycle locks in.

Keep an Eye On: Cambridge English’s next compliance report to Ofqual, due later in 2026, will confirm whether every affected candidate has been contacted and whether the rebuilt marking pipeline has cleared its independent audit.
