Hyperparathyroidism is a condition in which the body produces excessive amounts of parathyroid hormone, which is responsible for maintaining a balance of Calcium and Phosphorus in the body. When we have too much of this hormone in our blood, calcium levels can climb too high which can cause health concerns like bone weakening and kidney stones. In this article, we will discuss the types, symptoms, causes, and treatment of hyperparathyroidism in-depth along with a few important questions.

The endocrine system's four tiny glands that regulate calcium levels in our bodies are known as parathyroid glands. Situated in the neck behind the thyroid gland, these glands are normally the size of a grain of rice. The glands are mostly responsible for controlling the calcium, phosphorous, and Vitamin D levels in our blood, in our bones, and throughout our bodies.

Parathyroid Hormone (PTH)

PTH (parathyroid hormone) also known as parathormone, is a hormone produced by the parathyroid glands. It regulates the amount of calcium in our blood and bones. Depending on the level of calcium in our blood, the release of PTH is turned on and off. The parathyroid glands, for example, will release more PTH if the blood calcium level drops. More PTH causes the bones to release calcium, which raises the blood calcium level.

The following functions are performed by the parathyroid hormone: 

  • The primary function is to regulate the levels of calcium in the blood to control the density of bones.
  • Stimulates kidney cells to convert weaker forms of vitamin D into the most effective form for absorbing calcium from the intestines.
  • Regulation of phosphate
  • Calcium reabsorption from the proximal tubule, distal tubule, and renal collecting ducts is facilitated by this hormone

There various kinds of hyperparathyroidism are:

1. Primary Hyperparathyroidism

Primary hyperparathyroidism occurs when one or more parathyroid glands produce excessive amounts of PTH. A high level of PTH in the blood leads to a high level of calcium which can cause health issues like bone weakening, kidney stones, and loss of bone tissue. Non-threatening tumors and swelling on the gland can lead to this condition.

2. Secondary Hyperparathyroidism

Secondary hyperparathyroidism occurs when a condition outside of the parathyroid glands causes all of the glands to enlarge and become overactive and leads to excessive production of PTH hormone. High levels of PTH might have serious consequences for the person who is affected.

Secondary hyperparathyroidism can cause problems like bone disease and calcium built up in tissues and organs such as the heart and blood vessels.

3. Tertiary Hyperparathyroidism

This type of Hyperparathyroidism usually occurs in people with kidney ailments. The parathyroid gland during tertiary hyperparathyroidism becomes overactive and starts secreting excessive amounts of hormones even when the calcium levels are normal in the body.

Hyperparathyroidism is caused by:

  • Structural problems with parathyroid glands for instance a tumor or swelling of glands which result in an overactive parathyroid gland.
  • Cancer of a parathyroid gland 
  • Abnormally low levels of vitamin D.
  • Calcium deficiency that occurs when the kidney and intestine absorb calcium in huge quantities and remove calcium from the bones.

In the case of early hyperparathyroidism, there may be mild symptoms such as:

  • Appetite loss
  • Pain in joints and bones
  • Depression

Various examinations and tests might be used to diagnose hyperthyroidism. These are:

  • General eye, throat, and skin examinations.
  • Blood tests to detect hormone levels of Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone, which include T3 & T4, and to detect calcium levels.

In severe situations, surgical excision of parathyroid adenoma, i.e., non-malignant tumors, as well as the removal of the cancerous tumor, is sought.
