Hypoxia is a condition where there is insufficient oxygen delivery to tissues due to either insufficient blood supply or insufficient oxygen levels in the blood. It prevents the tissues from being able to maintain adequate homeostasis

  • From mild to severe, hypoxia can manifest itself in acute, chronic, or acute and chronic forms
  • Different tissues in the human body react differently to hypoxia. 
  • Some tissues may withstand certain types of hypoxia or ischemia for prolonged periods, while other tissues are severely harmed by low oxygen levels.

Hypoxia is a medical condition in which there is an insufficient level of oxygen reaching the tissue level in a particular area of the body. 

  • It is a disorder that impairs regular body activities by causing insufficient oxygen levels in the tissue.
  • Hypoxia can be local, affecting only a specific area or part of the body, or generalized, affecting the entire body.
  • Tissues that are hypoxic lack a sufficient supply of oxygen. 
  • If hypoxia progresses to anoxia, which is a severe case of hypoxia and signifies a complete lack of oxygen in the tissues  it may prove fatal.
  • Vital organs like the heart and brain are affected by hypoxia, which can be fatal. 
  • Its symptoms typically show up a few minutes after the oxygen supply is inadequate, and the consequences could be permanent.

Hypoxic Hypoxia

Arterial blood has oxygen scarcity as Haemoglobin is not bonded with Oxygen to its normal levels. 

  • This type of hypoxia affects the whole body, It is a very serious form of hypoxia. 
  • It is caused by inhalation of anesthetic agents.
  • Persons at high altitudes, Breathing of inert gas elements, Abnormal lung condition, Asthma or pneumonia, Mechanical obstruction of the air passage by foreign objects, etc are reasons.

Anaemic Hypoxia

In this type of hypoxia, there is a normal level of oxygen levels in arterial blood, but there is a shortage of functioning hemoglobin. 

  • It will affect the whole body. It is caused by acute and chronic hemorrhage, Primary and secondary Anemia.
  • Alterations in the oxygen affinity of hemoglobin in the blood, and Carbon Monoxide poisoning
  • It is also called “relative” anemia which is caused by a decrease in the O2-carrying capacity of compromised hemoglobin.
  • The two most common causes of anemic hypoxia are carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning and methemoglobinemia.

Stagnant Hypoxia

It is generally due to a decrease in the rate of flow of circulating blood. It will affect the entire body. In this condition, the blood hemoglobin is saturated usually with oxygen. 

  • This type of hypoxia occurs because the quantity of oxygen reaching the body tissues is inadequate. 
  • Sluggish speed in the rate of the circulating blood allows the blood to stagnate and results in a greater percentage of its oxygen. 
  • Due to this sluggish circulation, there is a greater accumulation of carbon dioxide gas in the body tissues. It is caused by cyanides (poisons).

Histotoxic Hypoxia

  • The tissue cells of the body is poisoned and so unable to accept oxygen in this type of hypoxia.
  • In this type of hypoxia, though the amount of oxygen is normal, the cells are not able to use the oxygen to the full extent.

Fulminating Hypoxia

It is a newly diagnosed form of Hypoxia. The inhalation of undiluted inert gases causes it such as nitrogen, methane, and helium.

Hypoxia is a condition that can be brought on by several factors. The following is a list of some of the common causes of hypoxia:

  • Lung collapse, lung fluid, a blood clot in a lung artery, or scarred and damaged lungs.
  • Conditions that are so stressful that they cause a heart attack or lung damage that results in hypoxia.
  • Diseases of the lungs, such as bronchitis and pulmonary edema, can cause hypoxia.
  • Heart conditions such as sickle cell anemia, etc.
  • Environmental conditions include high altitudes with low oxygen levels.
  • Accidents result in brain bleeding and damage.
  • The tissues' inability to take up the oxygen that is given to them as a result of being trapped in closed places, carbon dioxide builds up.
  • Insufficient oxygen-rich blood flow to the brain reduces mental clarity, causes brain damage, and causes illnesses.

  • Inherited cardiac conditions.

Although the origin, kind, and degree of hypoxia are all factors in medical treatment, increasing the oxygen supply is the main objective. 

  • The patient receives oxygen therapy when common hypoxia symptoms like shortness of breath appear.
  •  Under extreme circumstances, a mechanical ventilator is also delivered to the patient. 
  • By controlling the pressure, more oxygen is sent to the body's tissues. This significantly improves the patient's condition, who has had or is experiencing hypoxia. 
  • In a few situations, the patient's body is also given liquid oxygen. Doctors may also recommend medications to treat specific hypoxic conditions.
  • Avoiding environmental or physical conditions that cause hypoxia is one of the passive strategies. 
  • This includes giving up smoking, eating a balanced diet, exercising frequently, practicing yoga and deep breathing techniques, etc.
