The Adventure Of The Three Garridebs Summary
- The American Garrideb visits Holmes and Watson at Baker street as he was not happy about Nathan involving a detective.
- Garrideb claimed to be a lawyer. He created a scenario where he met Alexander Hamilton Garrideb, a millionaire land tycoon in Kansas.
- Hamilton would transfer his fifteen million dollar estate to John, considering that he can find two more Garridebs to share it with. John successfully failed to find people with the same name in America and hence came to England for his quest. Somehow, he only managed to find Nathan.
- During an interview, Holmes observes variations in the story told by John Garrideb but decides against the conflict. This interests Holmes to contact Nathan for further investigation.
- Holmes at Ryder Street observes Nathan’s nameplate, which seems to be there for a long time. This made him conclude that Garrideb was his last name.
- Nathan Garrideb is a serious collector who collects everything be it old coins or bones. Though he does not has anything precious in his collection.
- Holmes figures out that John had never asked for money and did not plan out any action. Nathan saw no reason for suspicions against John and this alarmed homes.
- During Holmes and Watson’s visits, John Garrideb was happy because he successfully found a third Garrideb. And the proof for the same was a newspaper advertisement placed by Howard Garrideb.
- Holmes figures out that John himself has published the article as it contains several Americanisms in spelling and wording.
- Nathan barely travels. Despite that and Nathan’s objections, John insisted Nathan to go Birmingham and meet Howard Garrideb. Which made it obvious to understand that John is bluffing to get Nathan out of his rooms.
- Holmes gets another piece of information which made him meet with Inspector Lestrade at Scotland Yard and sees a bunch of photographs.
- In those photographs, he saw John Garrideb. And his true identity is revealed as James Winter, Alias Morecroft, and Alias Killer Evans, who was sent to prison for shooting a man but could avoid the noose because of mitigating circumstances.
- The man he supposedly killed was Rodger Prescott, a forger from Chicago, whose description is similar to the former occupant of Nathan’s home.
- Holmes and Watson went to Gerrideb’s home with revolvers, and there arrives Winter Holmes and Watson hide and watch Winter use a jemmy to open a trapdoor and reveal a small cellar.
- They hold Winter before he could shoot twice and have struck Watson in the leg. Holmes is distracted for a while seeing Watson’s injury and strikes Evans on the head with the gun’s butt.
- Holmes drew blood and vowed that Evans could not leave the room alive if he managed to kill Watson. Watson’s wounds are not that deep.
- In the cellar, they find a printing press and counterfeit banknotes that were hidden by Prescott. Winter is then sent to prison and Nathan to a nursing home.
