The Third And Final Continent Summary

  • The story has four characters. Narrator, Mala- the new bride of the narrator, Mrs. Croft - 103 yrs old eccentric lady, who is the narrator’s landlord, and Helen - daughter of Mrs. Croft. 
  • The story mainly revolves around the relationship between narrator and Mrs. Croft. 
  • Mrs. Croft always shows the goodness of Mala to the narrator.
  • Mrs. Croft continuously insists the landing of the moon is ‘splendid,’ and this trait of her grew affection and respect in the narrator’s heart. 
  • Six weeks later, Mala narrator’s new bride travels United States to join her husband, in a furnished apartment.
  • The couple gets familiar with their surrounding. Narrator introduces Mala to Mrs. Croft during their visit to Mrs. Croft when she broke her hip. 
  • The couple explores the city and enjoys their newly wedded life. Suddenly one day, narrator reads Mrs. Croft’s obituary in the newspaper. It was a great shock for him, her death was the first mourning for him in America. And the life of Mrs. Croft was the first life in America whom he admired.
  • The story ends with the narrator and his wife being comfortably stable in America with American citizens. They are parents now and their son is in Harvard. The family shifted to a new location 20 miles from Boston.
  • The story shows how narrator about thirty years ago had survived on three continents. He adds it is an age when astronauts spent hours on the moon.
