Pappachi’s Moth Summary
- Mammachi, the grandmother of Rahel, and Estha drive them to Cochin for a vacation with Sophie Mol and Margaret Kochamma. Ammu, Chacko, and Baby Kochamma are also in the same car, a sky blue Plymouth that Pappachi bought. Chacko and Sophie Mol have met before
- While sitting in the car, the twenty-seven years old Ammu regrets marrying Babu. Ammu was eighteen years old when they met at a friend’s wedding reception in Calcutta.
- Babu proposed to Ammu five days later, and they had a big fat wedding. The couple soon moved to Assam, where Babu worked at a tea estate. Ammu got to know that Babu was an alcoholic, and their marriage was not glamorous.
- Ammu gave birth to twins during the China war in 1962. When they were twelve years old, Mr. Hollick, Babu’s boss, gave him an ultimatum. He could either get fired due to his laziness or send Ammu to sleep with his boss.
- Babu tried to impose this proposition. Ammu beat him senselessly for the same and returned to the Ayemenem with her children. She turned into a beautiful and unpredictable person.
- The narrator then talks about Mammachi. She started her pickle business alone when Pappachi was alive. He used to beat her every night with a brass vase.
- On one of Chacko’s summer vacations, when he came home from Oxford, he threatened his father to never hits Mammachi again.
- For pride, Pappachi purchased the Plymouth and did not let anyone drive it. He was an Imperial Entomologist at the Pusa Institute in Delhi, and he highly regretted that the moth which he discovered was not named after him.
- Moth flew into Pappachi’s drink and he noticed its uncommon appearance and took it to the institute. The moth was declared a variant of the common species. After long twelve years the moth was distinguished as a different species.
- Pappachi got no acknowledgment despite being its discoverer, which made him disappointed and gave him temper issues until he died due to a heart attack.
- Now, the story’s focus is shifted toward Chacko’s relationship with twins. Chacko told them to understand the family. The twins had to go to a prohibited history house on the other side of the river. Chacko added the Earth was an ancient woman, in comparison to whom they were inconsequential and This mesmerized the twins.
- At present, Chacko and Ammu have an argument in the car. Chacko is an eccentric Rhodes scholar who builds model airplanes as a hobby. He returned back to Ayemenem after quitting his job as a lecturer at Madras Christian College and took over the pickle business.
- Twins Rahel and Estha continued with the habit which deterred their teacher Ms. Mitten and read the road signs in both backward and forward side. On the way to Cochin, the Plymouth passes Murlidharan, the armless, naked lunatic.
- They drove past a procession of Communists. Rahel notices Velutha in communists march. She calls him, which made Ammu slap her.
- Rahel lives in New York. She remembers this incident and was unable to understand the reason behind Ammu’s anger. Velutha, a Paravan like his father, Vellya Paapen, was considered an untouchable.
- He was a extraordinarily skilled craftsman, and Mammachi let him do all kinds of chores for her. Velutha disappeared for four years, after he returns back Mammachi made him work on the maintenance of the pickle factory.
- Twins loved him. Vellya Paapen went to Mammachi and asked to kill Velutha because he was regularly seen rowing across the lake at night and returning by morning.
- The story turns towards communist marchers, they opened the door of Plymouth’s and madee Baby Kochamma wave to communist flag and repeat a slogan.
- Rahel says she had not seen Velutha. Post that day, Kochamma antagonizes Velutha because she was ashamed and embarrassed.
- The family continues to drive. Chacko mentioned Ammu, and twins as a burden. Life outside the car continues irrespective of the uncomfortable silence in the car.
