Glory At Twilight Summary
- The story ‘Glory at Twilight’ starts with the description of a slow-moving Indian train. Satyajit, a forty-years tall and thin man with sharp features was one of the passengers on the same train.
- The sudden collapse of his bank took all his private property overnight. His wife was unaware of the condition as she was at her parents’ house in Delhi. Satyajit sold off his diamond ring for the name-giving ceremony of his newborn child.
- His wife knew all about his struggle behind the luxurious living life. He was appointed as a clerk in a bank then a forged cheque for Rs. 2000/- made him managing director of a bank.
- He receives a wedding invitation from his Srinath Uncle for his fifth daughter Beena. Srinath was Satyajitneighbor at Shantipur village. Satyajit made up his mind to visit Santipur for the marriage ceremony. He would get a chance to look at his ancestral house and fishpond to which he wishes to give ancestral belongings to his wife as his last gift.
- As soon he stepped down from the train he saw a crowd rushing towards him. People from his village welcomed him with a garland. Satyajit was given a warm welcome. Srinath shared about the arrangement of the marriage.
- Satyajit only has Rs. 200/- in total. He decided to give Rs. 101/- since Been a had all the required stuff. He wanted to save Rs. 50/- to buy a perambulator for his newborn son.
- Satyajit decided to enjoy the village trip. He regretted not coming to Shantipur to bask in the people's homage. He then visited his house let out to a tenant. The small house gave him a feeling of security.
- The groom's party arrived. Satyajit wanted to give Rs 101/- but Srinath requested him to give Rs. 2001/- towards cash dowry. Satyajit wanted to tell about his misery. But he could not get a chance to tell it. So he took an excuse that he was in a hurry and hence was not well prepared for the occasion.
- Srinath returned and said that moneylender Harish agreed to give the cash but was willing to pay against the security of Satyajit’s house and fishpond.
- The house and pond were all he could give to his wife. Srinath came with folded hands before Satyajit. Satyajit agreed to the condition and the problem was solved. The villagers hated moneylender Harish for his tonight’s activities.
