Felling Of The Banyan Tree Summary
- The banyan tree is a metaphor for his life, for the family's upheaval.
- The poet says that his father that tenants have to vacate their house for demolishment. All the houses except the poet’s residence and a banyan tree were not demolished as these were considered sacred by his grandmother.
- All those sacred and medicinal trees were also cut down. But cutting down the huge banyan tree was a big problem. Yet the poet’s father had to cut it too as it was a given order
- That banyan tree stood there for decades and decades. It was three times bigger than the poet’s house. The trunk of the tree had a circumference of fifty feet. Its aerial roots were thirty feet long, touching the ground.
- At first branches were shredded and all the insects and birds residing there started leaving the tree. Fifty men in total together chopped the fat trunk of the tree. Everybody saw the rings of the Banyan tree showing its age of around two hundred years.
- Everyone witnessed the destruction in fear and fascination. The poet further said that they moved to Bombay from Baroda, and there were no trees.
