‘Father to Son’ Summary
The author, Elizabeth Jennings, perfectly portrayed the issue of the communication gap between two generations in this poem. this issue is hugely felt in this modern era as every young person is getting busy with their work, and the values of their parents remain unchanged with the old age.
- The narrator begins this poem with the note of the communication gap, as even if the father and the son are staying in the same house and yet to know about each other liking. Though the father tried to communicate with the son, the situation remained unchanged.
- In the next part, the father goes on about telling how they feel like strangers to each other and do not talk much. It’s as if the connection between them is only the facial resemblance they share.
- The father certainly has his own desires to communicate with his son more clearly, though he does not realize or understand how being a mature guy, his son needs his own world.
- In the end, we get to know how the son feels about all these. The son is sad as his father did not try to understand his feelings when he was younger, and now that sadness has turned into anger. The readers will be able to understand pretty easily that the main problem between them is the communication gaps.
