The Luncheon Summary
- The story revolves around the narrator and a lady who is supposed to be forty. The incidents took place twenty years ago. The lady invites him for a lunch date in an elite restaurant ‘Foyot’.
- Narrator agrees just for the sake of the previous conversation through letters. Narrator was only left with eighty francs for his all monthly expenses. and a modest lunch also should not cost more than fifteen.
- However, the lady’s repetitive words “I never eat anything for lunch” gave him enough hope at their arrival at the restaurant. While uttering the same words again and again the lady chooses costly salmon as the main dish along with other pricey items like caviar, champagne, asparagus, etc.
- Unsurprisingly, she kept talking about the narrator's cheapest mutton chop he has chosen, as an unhealthy dish. This embarrassment from the lady left him suffering financially, as he couldn’t afford anything for the rest of the month.
- At last, the author observes that the harassment she has done to narrator on a respective day has been taken care of by gods on his behalf of him.
- The lady has now become overweight and seeing this appearance gives the narrator satisfaction.
