Class 10 Science Chapter 3 Metals and Non-metals – Important Topics

Metals: Metals are shiny, hard materials which are good conductors of heat and electricity. They are also malleable and ductile. Examples include Sodium, iron, gold, copper, silver.

Non-metals: Non-metals are usually rough, non-malleable, non-ductile and poor conductors of electricity. Examples include chlorine, fluorine, phosphorus, noble gases, etc.

The order of intensity or the reactivity of metal is arranged to give the Reactivity Series. Reactivity of elements decreases on moving from top to bottom of the series. The reactivity of metals in decreasing order is given below.

K>Na>Ca>Mg>Al>Zn>Fe>Pb>Cu

Metals react with non-metals to form ionic bonds. Compounds so formed are known as Ionic Compounds. Ions are formed when an atom gains or loses an electron.

Example of ionic bonds: Sodium reacts with chlorine to form Sodium chloride which is held together by ionic bonds.

Elements that exhibit the characteristics of both metals and non-metals are called metalloids.
