NCERT Solutions for Class 10 Science

Reproduction is a biological process in which an organism reproduces offspring who are biologically identical to the organism. Reproduction enables and ensures species continuity generation after generation. Organisms reproduce in two ways- namely, asexually and sexually.

Asexual Reproduction: Asexual reproduction takes place in bacteria, amoeba, hydra, etc, and does not involve the fusion of male and female gametes.

Sexual Reproduction: Sexual reproduction can be seen in humans and many animals, and involves the fusion of male and female gametes.

Pollination: Pollination is the transfer of pollen grains from the anther (the male portion of a flower) to the stigma (the female component of a flower).

  • Self-Pollination is a pollination process in which pollen is transferred between the anther and stigma of the same flower. 
  • Cross-Pollination is a type of pollination in which pollen is transferred between the anther and stigma of different blooms of the same plant or distinct plants of the same species.

When pollen is transported to the stigma, male gametes from pollen grains are released and unite with the egg in the ovule to generate a zygote. This process of gamete fusion is known as fertilization.

In humans, male reproductive organs consist of:

  • Testes
  • Scrotum
  • Vas deferens
  • Accessory glands
  • Penis

Female reproductive organs consist of:

  • Ovaries
  • Fallopian Tube
  • Uterus
  • Vagina
