Class 11 Chemistry Chapter 8 Redox Reactions –  Important Topics

Redox reaction is the combination of oxidation-reduction reaction wherein the oxidation number of a participating chemical species changes.

  • Oxidation Reaction: Oxidation is defined as the loss of electrons or an increase in the oxidation state of an ion or atom.
  • Reduction Reaction: Reduction is defined as the gain of electrons or a decrease in the oxidation state of an ion or atom.

Oxidizing agents: Oxidising agent (also known as an oxidizer or oxidant) is a chemical species that tends to oxidise other substances, causing them to lose electrons and raises their oxidation state. Examples of Oxidizing agents include Halogens, Oxygen, Hydrogen Peroxide.

Reducing agents: A Reducing agent is an element (or compound) which loses one or more electrons to an electron recipient group. In a redox chemical process, it oxidises itself. Common reducing agents include metals, hydracids, lithium, iodine, reducing sugars.
