Mother’s Day Summary

Mother’s day is a cynical drama which is penned by J. B. Priestley who writes about the fate of mothers in every household. The mother’s efforts in every household are considered smaller in comparison to the earning members of a family. The drama depicts the sufferings of the protagonist Mrs. Pearson who is ill-treated and looked down upon by her family. To teach them a lesson, Mrs. Pearson meets up with Mrs. Fitzgerald who is an astrologer. The drama shows how Mrs. Pearson with the help of Mrs. Fitzgerald teaches her family members a lesson. The events of the drama are summarized as follows:

• Mrs. Pearson is shown to experience embarrassment and disrespect from her daughter Doris, son Cyril, and her husband Mr. Pearson. 
• Mrs. Pearson decides to discuss her sufferings with Mrs. Fitzgerald who is an astrologer.
• Mrs. Fitzgerald assures Mrs. Pearson to help her in these tough times by using her charms and switching their personalities of each other to teach the family members a lesson.
• Mrs. Pearson, a little skeptical at first, agrees to change roles and transforms into a lady who smokes and drinks and is very shrewd in nature. Mrs. Fitzgerald is now a calm and composed lady.
• As Doris enters the house and commands her mother to iron her clothes, we see that Mrs. Perason becomes agitated and asks Doris to stop lecturing her and perform her work on her own.
• Later, as Cyril asks his mother to make tea, Mrs. Pearson is seen scolding him for his irresponsible behavior. Mrs. Pearson makes it clear to him that she too wants to party on weekends and is not available to do their tasks. 
• When George Pearson notices his wife drinking and smoking, he objects to her behavior. Mrs. Pearson mocks her husband and reveals that he is an embarrassment to her. 
• Mrs. Person now realizes that her family members are all hurt and she requests Mrs. Fitzgerald to transform her back to end the suffering.
• The family now unites together having realized the significant contributions made by Mrs. Pearson to the family. 
• The family members are seen taking up roles and responsibilities to help Mrs. Pearson.

Mother’s Day is a portrayal of a lot of houses where the mothers sulk and suffer in silence. Furthermore, it highlights that the issue raised in the play is real and unlike the play, it cannot be resolved in reality by switching the personalities.
