The Address Summary

The Address is an emotional post-war tale written by the Dutch Novelist, Marga Minco. The story is woven around the lives of Jews who suffered extreme oppression post the liberation war in Holland. The tale is a personal account of a daughter who goes back to her native land, Holland looking for her beloved mother’s belongings. Mrs. S, a Jewish lady, had to flee Holland temporarily owing to the liberation war. Before moving out, her neighbor Mrs. Dorling, a non-Jewish, promises to take care of the valuables till all the chaos settles and does not lose a chance of taking the well-maintained and precious items from Mrs. S’s house.  Following is the chronological order of the story for easy understanding:

• Mrs. S gives her daughter the address to her home in Holland. She is asked to meet Mrs. Dorling, her neighbor at Number 46 Marconi Street.
• The narrator of the story, the daughter travels to Holland post the war, and she is eager to finally see her mother’s belongings which are partially kept at Mrs. Dorlings place. 
• Mrs. Dorling does not entertain the narrator during her visit and silently decides to put up a blunt face when asked about the belongings.
• The daughter now is on her own and realizes the selfishness of people toward the oppressed post the war. She decides to once again visit Mrs. Dorling and inquire.
• During the second visit, Mrs. S’s daughter is greeted by Mrs. Dorling’s 15-year-old daughter who claims her mother not being home.
• Mrs. S’s daughter is allowed into Mrs. Dorling’s home and upon entry, she begins to identify her mother’s most prized possessions at various places within Mrs. Dorling’s house.
• The daughter is deeply pained to see the fate of her mother’s belongings and realizes that the survivors post-war have resorted to mentally torturing the oppressed.
• She decides to give up on all the materialistic memories left behind by her mother and to never come back to the address Number 46 Marconi Street.

The Address is a reflection of the chaos and the grief post-war. The story shows the readers how low people can stoop and start to disrespect each other and snatch things for their personal selfish gains during adverse times. It also convinces the readers that human emotions are temporary and subject to change as the situations around them change. Hence, it is always better to detach from materialistic objects and treat every fellow human with a little more care and consideration.
