Zinc is a transition metal and is present in the d block in the periodic table. 30 is the atomic number of zinc. Hence, the electronic configuration on zinc is \(1s^22s^22p^63s^23p^63d^{10}4s^2 \).
- The valence shell of the element i.e. 4s contains 2 valence electrons.
- This means that zinc can lose 2 electrons present in the 4s shell to transform into the Zn2+ cation.
Hence, the valency of zinc is 2.

Valency
The valency of an element refers to the number of atoms of an element that combine with atoms of other elements in order to form a molecule. Valency helps to measure the combining power of an atom.
- The stronger the bond between the atoms of an element, the higher is the valency.
- Valency, in chemistry, is important as it helps us to understand how atoms are linked together to form molecules.
Each element in nature aspires to be an octet. Zinc has a total of 30 electrons, with 28 in the first 3 shells and two in the 4th shell. So, it must either lose two electrons or gain six electrons in order to attain an octet.
As a result, Zinc has a valency of two.
