NIT Kurukshetra : The Rising NIT

I appeared for the JEE Mains and JEE Advanced examinations for entry into top engineering institutes. Thereafter, I applied to JoSAA with the rank I'd achieved. I was allotted Mechanical Engineering at NIT, KKr in round no. 6. All students who have completed class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Maths are eligible for this course.

I chose mechanical engineering because of my deep interest in automobiles and aeronautics. Moreover, the course deals with a lot of physics which was my favourite subject. The student to faculty ratio is about 15:1 with most faculty members being PhDs. A lot of the professors act as mentors and are really helpful. There are 2 Sessionals and 1 End Semester examination per semester. The examinations are conceptual and a thorough understanding of the subject is required to secure good marks.

Internship opportunities are available after the start of the 5th semester with a compulsory intern/project in the 6th semester. It has harder to get an internship in the core branches. Most students in CS/IT/ECE however get PPOs. There is a Siemens Centre of Excellence in the college which is a good place to do projects.

The placements are quite good and might as well be called exceptional for branches like CS, IT and ECE. The placement percentage for almost all branches is over 90% with the average figure being somewhere between 7-8 LPA. Over 150 companies visit each year including the big recruiters offering hefty packages. It is harder to get an internship than to get placed. Placements begin in the 7th semester, with a bare minimum CGPA criterion.

The fees structure is fairly decent and is actually quite less as compared to other premier technological institutes of the country. There is no specific fees hike policy. The ROI is great for most courses. There are a lot of scholarship options available for those who need them as well.

The life at NIT, Kkr is vibrant, to say the least. A host of activities constantly take place on campus. There are a lot of student-run clubs present which cater to the students' interests and conduct the annual cultural fest, Confluence. Apart from this, there are multiple student-run technical societies that help students thrive and get hands-on with the theoretical concepts. They also conduct the annual technical fest, Techspardha. The library has a large book bank with almost all course-related material and is operational 24*7. The classrooms are built-in amphitheatre style and are equipped with Air Conditioners. The sports complex houses facilities for all major sports and separate teams for each sport exist as well.

There are 11 boy's hostels and 4 girl's hostels present on campus. A few of these are quite old and do not have appropriate facilities. Students are allotted single seater rooms from the second year onwards. All students can easily get a room in the hostel. The rooms are spacious and the hostel premises are green. Each hostel is equipped with a common room that has indoor games and a television. The quality of mess food is average. The menu for each mess is decided by a student-run Mess Committee.
