Course Curriculum Overview
Every branch in BITS consists of Single Degree students of that branch and dual-degree students of the senior batch who are alloted to that branch based on their CGPA. So the Batch strength of Mechanical is around 150 each year. The faculty is good with a lot of experience in their fields and some have some really good research work too. Any course comprises Mid-semester, End semester, and evaluative components spread across the semester. The evaluative components may comprise Tutorial tests, Quizzes, and Labs. The difficulty of all evaluative depends completely on the Instructor in charge (IC) of the course.
Internships Opportunities
BITS offers 3 internships through the course. Two of them are called Practice Stations (PS) and one is called Summer Internship. PS-I is after the completion of the second year and PS-II depends on your choice. If you have a SI offer then you have to sit for placements in semester 1 and PS-II in semester 2. If you don't have an SI offer then its up to you. Summer Internship recruitment starts with the start of the third year of your single degree course.
Placement Experience
Placement season is held in the last year of your respective course. The Placement ratio is near 100% with a median of around 14lpa. The domestic highest varies every year but is generally around 50lpa+. Many top companies visit the college for recruiting.
Fees and Financial Aid
BITS has an yearly 15% fee hike. The institute offers Merit-based and Merit cum Need (MCN) scholarships. For merit scholarships, you need a CGPA of more than 9.2. For MCN the eligibility criteria are family income less than around 12 LPA. The percentage of scholarships depends on the student's GPA. The institute gives around 80% scholarships on tuition fees for students with having GPA of around 8.5 or more. This GPA criterion changes every semester based on the student's performance.
Campus Life
BITS has an awesome college life. Some various clubs and departments teach you a lot. All the fests are student-run so being in clubs and departments gives you opportunities to even lead these fests. BITS Pilani (Pilani) has its cultural fests at Oasis, which is the second-largest fest across the country. It was held around Nov. The sports fest BOSM is hosted around Sept/Oct and the tech fest APOGEE is hosted around March/April.
Hostel Facilities
The rooms of the hostels are decent and most hostels have been renovated recently. Students don't need to rent rooms or PGs as hostel facilities are good. Mess food is somewhat okay, some days the food is good, and really bad on other days. If you don't want to eat in mess, there are plenty of food outlets on the campus, open till 2 am.
Admission
You have to appear for BITSAT, which is the entrance exam for all campuses of BITS. The cutoff varies each year based on the difficulty of the questions. The dates of filling out the form are declared by the college on their website and the application is also done on the website itself. Some cutoffs for 2020 are available on the website. Some cutoffs of my year were:- CSE- 380+, EEE- 340, ENI- 324, Mech- 298, Chem- 281, Civil- 269. These are roughly the cutoffs I remember for single degrees, there might be some changes and BITS also offers dual degrees. BITS does not offer any reservation benefits.
