What is UKVI IELTS?

UKVI is the version of IELTS approved by the UK Home Office for visa applications. UKVI stands for UK Visas and Immigration. The exam is a Secure English Language Test, or SELT, which means a test taken under tighter identity and security rules.

The questions, timing, and 0 to 9 band scale match the standard exam. You can compare the full format against the structure and scoring of the regular IELTS exam. Only a limited set of centres hold UKVI approval. The Home Office publishes the current list of approved tests and approved centres. The result also carries an extra identifier that visa officers use to verify your score.

Note: If the UK visa route you are applying for requires an SELT, you cannot use an ordinary IELTS test. You must take the specific IELTS test approved by UKVI, such as IELTS for UKVI.

Types of UKVI IELTS Tests

Four tests hold UKVI approval: IELTS for UKVI, Life Skills A1, Life Skills A2 and Life Skills B1. IELTS for UKVI itself splits into Academic and General Training. Your visa route decides which one you should sit for. IELTS for UKVI tests all 4 skills. Life Skills tests only speaking and listening, so it suits family and settlement routes.

Academic and General Training differ in the reading passages and the first writing task. The Academic version is the default for university study. Whereas General Training is for those who are willing to relocate to the UK for work and job opportunities.  

Note: Life Skills has no band score. It is a straight pass or fail on speaking and listening, so preparation looks completely different.

UKVI IELTS fees in India for 2026

UKVI IELTS costs INR 19,250 in India, which is INR 250 above the standard test. The gap covers the extra secure testing arrangements. Fees include taxes and stay the same in every Indian city.

Extra Charges to Budget for:

• Enquiry on Results, the official re-mark: INR 14,400.
• Additional Test Report Forms beyond the first five: INR 350 per institution.

What the UKVI IELTS registration fee covers:

• One full attempt at all booked sections.
• Your Test Report Form with the UKVI number.
• Five free electronic score reports to recognised organisations.

What it does not cover:

• Coaching, mock tests or study material.
• Any retake, even if you miss the mark in one section.

Step-by-Step UKVI IELTS Booking

Applicants can book UKVI IELTS online through IELTS Candidate Login. Select a UKVI-approved centre and pay the full fee upfront. Your passport is the only accepted identity document for the IELTS test in India. Follow the steps below to complete your UKVI registration: 

1. Open the official IELTS booking portal for India.
2. Choose the test type marked for UK Visas and Immigration.
3. Pick the format, either on computer or on paper.
4. Filter centres, since not every centre runs UKVI sessions.
5. Enter your name exactly as printed on your passport.
6. Upload a clear colour scan of your passport.
7. Pay by card, net banking, demand draft or bank deposit.

The Home Office states that you should be able to sit a test within 28 days of booking. Slots at popular centres still move fast during peak intake months.

Note: A name mismatch is the most avoidable failure in the whole process. Keep your name in the form as it is on your passport. Any slightest changes can lead to rejection of the form and loss of registration fees. 

Book at least three months before your visa filing date. That leaves room for a result delay and one retake without touching your intake.

UKVI IELTS Scores Validity 

A UKVI IELTS result is valid for two years from the date of the test. The Home Office measures that window back from the date you submit your application. Applicants must take test at correct time so that at the timeof admission and visa application the scores are valid. 

Results sat inside the UK work for applications made abroad. Results sat abroad work for applications made inside the UK. That flexibility helps students who switch routes mid-stay.

UK Visa IELTS Scores Requirements

UKVI IELTS Results

Computer-based UKVI IELTS results arrive in 1 to 2 days. Life Skills results take about 7 days. Your Test Report Form looks almost identical to the standard one. The difference is a UKVI number printed on it.

That number is the SELT unique reference the Home Office uses. You enter it on the visa form, and a missing number can get the application refused.

UKVI IELTS Cancellation and Rescheduling Policy

UKVI cancellations follow a sliding refund scale that starts at 75% and falls to zero. The rules are stricter than the standard test, so read them before you pick a date.

Refunds usually reach your account in seven to ten working days. Transfers to a new date cost INR 4,850 and depend on seat availability.

UKVI IELTS Mistakes That Can Cost You Money
