M.Phil. Biochemistry is a 2 years full time post graduate course which is divided into 4 semesters. Biochemistry is the study of the chemical processes that drive biological systems. Explores the basic principles of biochemistry and develops the student’s appreciation and understanding of biological networks. Through a biotechnology course, they apply what they learned in other biochemistry courses to biotechnology, this also refers to genetic engineering.
Students examine cell structure and organization, enzymology, biochemical regulations, and protein structures. The Research and advances pertaining to DNA cloning and modification are addressed, and they examine the agricultural, and medical and industrial applications of biotechnology research. Students examine specific uses for biochemistry through biotechnology. They research the legal and social ramifications for using biotechnology in medicine, industry, agriculture, and the environment.
M.Phil biochemistry course is usually an advanced class. They examine the parts of a plant and learn how the different parts interact with one another. This course covers ways in which the parts of plants can be useful for different things, such as the oils and flavour or health. They are able to identify possibilities for modifying a plant's chemical makeup or replicating it, this could lead to solutions to hunger and health problems.
A consistent theme in this course is the development of a quantitative understanding of the interactions of biological molecules from a thermodynamic, structural, and molecular dynamic point of view. Simulation environment provides the opportunity for you to explore the effect of molecular interactions on the biochemical properties of systems. This study assumes that students have taken including basic thermodynamics, introductory chemistry, and introductory organic chemistry.
The average annual course fee ranges anywhere between INR 1,000 to 1 lakh depending upon the institute offering the course. The average salary offered for this course in India to successful postgraduates of the course ranges between INR 2 lakhs to 11 lakhs depending upon the candidate’s expertise in the field.

The course leading to the degree of M.Phil. is essentially research-based and does not involve assessed instructional courses. Candidates are based in a research group and undertake research on a topic agreed with the principal investigator. They also have an Advisor and a Graduate Thesis Panel, as in the Ph.D. student programme.
Students write an M.Phil. thesis, is examined via an oral examination involving an Internal and External Examiner. The aim of the M.Phil. is to give candidates a solid grounding in modern biochemical and biomedical research techniques and practical experience of a full-time experimental research project. This aims to give experience working as part of a team in an academic environment and gaining skills in scientific communication through both oral presentations and writing.
This course involves a series of lectures covering a variety of useful experimental techniques used in biochemistry and molecular biology. Their aim is to familiarize students with a wide range of techniques extending well beyond those that they will immediately encounter in their own research project. They must also attend a weekly seminar series throughout the year and present their work to the group at least once during this series. They encourage students to take part in a wide range of skills training opportunities available to both Masters and PhD research students.

With the world evolving day in and day out, intense need to understand the organisms evolving with it and also the role these organisms have on the environment. They can think of working with fields in medical, public health care, agriculture, forensic environment etc. Because of the nature of work there is a tremendous scope of research.
One can think of working with both public and private sectors. Some companies like Medical Instrument companies, Food and Drink industries, Biotechnology, Research Companies and Laboratories, Chemical manufacturing companies, Sales and Marketing Firms, Health and Beauty Care are always in constant need of people to come work with them.
Also some companies in the public sector are good employers or biochemists; Drug Manufacturing Companies, Blood Service, Public Health Entities, Industrial Laboratories, Forensic Science, Cancer research institutes, Agriculture and fisheries, Research Departments, Educational Institutes, Hospitals, Public Health Laboratories, Environmental Pollution Control, Cosmetic Industries, etc.
There is also another field where there is always need for experts in the field of Biochemistry which is the quality control and safety section. All pharmaceuticals, companies in the field of food, health and beauty care, required safety checks, etc. regulations and quality control.
Some of the top professional avenues open to such postgraduates are listed below with the corresponding salaries offered for the respective positions.
|JOB POSITION||JOB DESCRIPTION||AVERAGE ANNUAL SALARY IN INR|
|Assistant research scientist||Biotechnology researchers investigate both plant and animal life at the molecular level to understand their place in nature. Knowledge gained from this research may be used to create a range of items, new pharmaceutical drugs and pesticides to food preservation methods and disease-resistant plant strains. Research may also lead to other breakthroughs intended to benefit mankind.||INR 3,87,000|
